It's the 'personal observations' and 'quirky historica uses' that put me off. (in the synopsis) His style is a bit familiar and grates on me immensely.
As I'm secretary of our local Natural History Society most people assume I'm glued to the Autumn Watch/Spring Watch programmes - I would be but for Bill Oddie who has the same shredding effect on my nerves. Bearded Tit!

Don't mind Bill Oddie, it's Katie Humble (or whatever she's called) that grates on me. Not read any of Alan's books but used to like him on GW, don't really watch it now with Monty Don, not my style at all and I know that some on here really like him.

Looks like a bandwagon to me but then again, why not aim for the current hot market I guess.

I'm really not a fan of Titchmarsh's home spun, 'folksy' style either (although I must add that I'm prepared to put up with a lot from Bill Oddie as The Goodies were a huge childhood fave).

I dont like AT's style, it seems too patronising for me I'm afraid - but maybe good for total beginners to the garden? But I wont watch anything with him in any more.

And as Bill Oddie said last night at the end of Autumnwatch - doesn't matter which channel you turn over to, Alan T's bound to be on it!

As for Monty Don, well he'll never be Geoff H though he tries hard. I warm to Carole Klein, at least she's entheusiastic and is ordinary even though she's been made over. And if Sarah Raven wasn't allowed to use so many superlatives, she'd be struck dumb. Now her I can't stand!

For cookery I used to like occasional forays into Antonio Carluccio territory. Any recipe that starts with 'Take some good olive oil' (said in his fruity tones) and the pic showed him pouring half a pint in a big pan - well, can't be bad!

Geoff Hamilton was the gardening guru for me (with humblest apologies to Nick.)

BTW - I'm secretary 'cause I can spell and I've got a computer! No tweeds - lots of fleeces.

I'm a Geoff H fan too - maybe it depends who was around in your 'formative' years? Monty is okay too, and Carol K for her enthusiasm, she makes me want to get out there and get to it! Can't be doing with Dairmot either and his 'hard landscaping'.

Chefs - can't think of one I like offhand (maybe that comes from having a couple in the family!), tho I do like Saturday Kitchen now and again. Anyone into that 'new' Market Kitchen programme with Tom PB?

Oh well, for chefs, Rick Stein, Carluccio - one of the things I always do when I'm back in the UK is eat and shop at one of his places - and Patience Gray, now she really could make something out of nothing, shame I found her (through Rick S) so recently, could have been using her recipes for most of my life I think.

Lol! It's funny how we love and hate (and love to hate?) relatively harmless celebrities, isn't it?!

I'm another Geoff H fan, I'm the sort of age that he could have been my Dad and in gardening terms, he sort of was! I quite like Monty but the smock wearing all smacks a bit of middle class pretension. Carol Klein is great and definitely someone I'd be happy to have a natter with.

For cooks, I do like Nigella and would like to BE her Unfortunately, my house is a tip and you're as likely to find me heating up a supermarket pizza as cooking a gourmet meal. Do have the bust though My pet hate is Jamie Oliver. I feel I should like (or at least respect) him for all he did re school dinners etc but... ugh! I can't even bring myslef to buy a magazine with his smirking face on the cover, nevermind any of his books!
