Christmas Trees

Sorry to bring the dreaded "C" word up again an no idea if this is the best place to put this but................

Anyway, a friend of mine is wanting to plant a live Christmas Tree in their front garden which they can put lights on annually rather than having a dead tree in their front room by New Year. They've asked me if I know what variety they should chose which won't get too big but will look nice all year around. Any ideas, not really my area but advice would be apprecitate.

We have had a "real" tree for(it seems like) the last hundred years! For the last three years the beloved has climbed into the attic,thrown down a black plastic bag from which I have extracted a tree,placed it on a table,plugged it in and sat back.There we are,one pretty Christmas tree.

Not exactly what I meant and it certainly wouldn't look very good in her garden!

My daughter bought a real tree c/w roots two years ago, when not in use its pot is plunged into the soil in an out of the way place on the lottie. In the two years she has had it, it's grown about 6 inches. If you plant it in a root bag or pot and then plunge it into the soil, the roots will be restricted, preventing it from growing too big.

I was hoping to do that last year, PW. Unfortunately I don't like to start my Christmas in mid-November. When I went to look for a real, rooted tree a fortnight before Christmas they were all gone. I asked when there were more due in. "Next November!" So I'm on the lookout now.

Oh Flum. I just Freecycled one that somebody dumped on my allotment in the summer. I could have parcelled it up to you!
