Bought this terrific tool

Ages ago I saw one of the other allotment holders using a vintage hand cultivator. He was rolling it across a bed nipping out weeds and bringing the soil up to a loverly seeding tilth.

Well I found a site with a modern version so treated myself.

Tried it out yesterday and it breaks up clods of heavy soil a treat and had the small weeds up and out with no hassle.

Can't wait till spring when I can use it in anger and absolutely perfect for using in my raised beds. It also has a small handle so you can use just one tine set for weeding between rows of plants.

Wolf make a very similar implement. I haven't tried it myself but one of the gardens I am working in over the winter has two in their shed, so may borrow one to try out on the new beds in my tunnel

We've one of those StaceySteve, we found it on eBay, called a Garden Weasel. It's great, and you can take off individual sets of wheels to fit round plants & between rows too. Great for a tenner!
I think the Wolf ones cost about £15 and you have to buy the proper handle too (Another £20?). A broom handle is all you need for the Weasel.

I bought one a while ago, mine's a "wolf" one. Like you say, it's excellent for breaking up the soil and bringing up weeds. Mine is part of the "wolf" tool range that you can use the same handle for, just change the tool bit at the bottom. DDL

Hi - Like the look of that - will definately get hold of one. Found a great vintage hand drawn cultivator last month on Ebay . Vicious looking but really does the business Am still in the long process of clearing my plot not using chemicals so plently of work to continue with this Spring .

How's M.K ? Worked there at the council for two years before moving to York five years ago. Lived in tiny village called Pitchcott near Aylesbury - some beautiful countryside thereabouts..

Will let you know how I get on with the spiky beast in a month or twos time

I use the wolf easy change tools, and have the earth miller. I wasn't going to get one as they are relatively pricey (over £30 if I remember right). But, after spending a couple of hours getting nowhere on the first of 5 beds (not sure what I was doing wrong- just couldn't get the soil nice and fine) I went and got one. Each further bed took 15 mins each to get how I wanted them. Money well spent after all.

Its my birthday next month - my mum bought me my first "wolf" with the handle and rake head and I've asked hubby if I can have another tool from the range as my birthday pressie - I kind of described what it is I'm looking for, but if its definately called the earth miller, then I can send him off to the garden centre with the correct name to ask for
