  • Kitchen knives

    Hi all.
I am looking to buy a set of good quality kitchen knives. Carving, paring etc etc.
Has anyone got a good recommendation?
    Thanks

A lot depends on how much you want to pay. I use Kitchen Devils or Richardson, both very good, reasonably priced and suit my small hands.

Sabatier are very good and a bit more affordable than some.

Henckels 4 Star by Zwilling. I do lots of cooking and I would not use anything else.
8" Chefs Knife (Usually comes with free paring knife worth £25) Slicing Knife, Bread Knife, and Utility Knife should be enough.
Buy from Ebay - sussexcookshop I bought mine from there for less than half price

The only knife I have with a name on it is a Kitchen Devil - love it and had it 18 years!!

I'm with Coomber, Global knives for me - I love them and as soon as I had my first one they rapidly replaced my Sabatier knives.

I use Sabatier - I usually get one at Christmas from someone (are they trying to tell me something?) so have a big rack full now and they're great. I've also got a tiny vegetable knife that is AMAZING but looks cheap as chips (no idea where I got it from) that I use every day. I wish I knew where I could get another!

Not sure where ours are from - not sure they're any particular make. I tend to get on better with the bigger knife (it's a 10" blade I think) I tend to find smaller knives too fiddly. Knives are a very personal thing - shame they don't let you try them first....

                        Kitchen Knives

Sabatier for me - and carbon steel, not stainless. (But you'll need a good steel for sharpening.) It will discolour, but if you want it bright and shiny will soon clean up with some abrasive - I've got an ancient tin of Vim that gets used only for this! I go for big knives too - I've used mine for over twenty years and only now is it getting a bit "hollow" along the blade - the handle and the edge it takes is as good as ever. It wasn't cheap, but over twenty years.....

PS Picked my last tomatoes and courgettes outside yesterday, and there are still some peppers to come. Better get them in before Wednesday's forecast frost. FROST ALMOST EVERYWHERE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT.. BE WARNED!!

Vim - WOW that takes me back a bit - I remember when they sold it in pink and blue plastic pots for bathroom use, and my father thought it was talcum powder. I can still hear the screams!!

                            Try looking on Nesbitts website.

They are do all things for kitchens, while they are aimed at the catering trade, they do sell to the public at trade prices.

I have bought a few things from them and they offer a fantastic service.

Well worth a look to anyone who is serious about cooking.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I think the general consencus (not sure I spelt that right?) is for either Global or Sabatier. I shall peruse the Nesbitts website and make my decision.
Thanks for all the help. Will be honest, had never heard of Global knives before now.
