  • Cabbage White Protection

On my mum's christmas list is 'Cabbage White Protection' for her brassicas.
    So what's best?
I'm tempted by debris netting but I've never seen it close up - how big are the holes?
I'm after something that actually works! As it's a present the price is not so important!

Debris netting has no "holes" as such - it's very fine.

Except - along the edges - and those are about an inch big.

      Enviromesh is good I'm told

Insect netting for fruit and vegetables. Covering with Enviromesh will enable you to grow fruit and vegetables free from insect damage.

Protects against birds, rabbits, cabbage root fly, carrot fly, cabbage white butterfly, pea moth, cutworm, cabbage whitefly plus many species of aphids. Lasts 10 years.

I'd also go for Enviromesh but remember it doesn't work if the leaves are touching the netting as the eggs can pass through the holes, so make sure you use some kind of frame (eg canes, platic hoops etc) to hold it up, Also make sure it is well pegged down all the way round (indeed I bury the edges of mine in the soil), cabbage white are very good at flying up and under

If you can find the eggs then simply pick them off. Usually they are on the underside and are laid in small groups.

Find them, usually on the underside of the leaf, and squish 'em
