I think it's interesting to see how they used to live and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, but I remember how much hard work my Mum had to put in with 7 kids, no washing machine, hot water or bathroom. We did have gas and electric, which they didn't then, but I remember not having a vaccum cleaner, using a broom and the dust settling on everything, then dusting. I'm not saying that for us kids there weren't pluses, but Mum having time to do things with us wasn't one of them!
I know I wouldn't actually like living like that all the time. I like having hot water taps, a washing machine, and a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the cat hairs. There was so much sheer drudgery, especially for women on the farm. Remember the bed bugs bit?I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.

What a great series, I went and watched it (on the BBC iPlayer) due to everyone's recommendation. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Reminds me of the Amish that live around the area where I grew up in rural Pennsylvania. Even the clothing and hats are a bit similar.

Isn't it wonderful? I watched Tales of the Green Valley and really enjoyed it and Victorian Farm is even better. I grew up on a farm (in the 1960's) and we had a mangold chopper - my job to use it when I was a kid (10 or 11). And I remember my Dad using a seed fiddle (from the trailer from next week's programme). Tend to agree with Barley Sugar though - lord there were no labour saving devices in the house were there - laundry taking 3 days! Aaarggh! But the animals, the techniques and the farming are fascinating. Plus as oil gets more and more scarce, we are probably going to have to revert to some of these to grow our food!

I was impressed wth the making a fence, how they managed without sawmills etc.......i cried when they pulled the lamb out, good call.............the rabbit dessert was tempting. I am awaiting on a lottie holder who goes shooting to bring me rabbit...........wish I could live like that for a while.Dont worry about tomorrow, live for today

Well I couldn't cope. They'd all be going around with mucky shirts if I had to spend 3 days doing laundry. I often think we can get a really romantic idea about past times but the reality was harsh. I'll stay where I am! Don't forget you'd get half a day off a week and a day at Christmas. No National Health. I'm a Softee!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
