I use Joseph Bentley forks and spades. I agree with Snadger that some tools feel "numb", the ones I use are wooden with stainless steel business ends. Being wooden they are very organic to use, and very comfortable.

Despite being a big, strong lad I use a ladies (sometimes called a border) fork and spade. It saves your back in a big way.

If your bending forks then I suggest you use a spade first, they are for digging, forks are for more genteel work like forking in, planting and impaling the wife with

I've got a couple of forks at home that were - well - my OH came with them and I've never asked - I think they were his ex wife's late father's...but they are the best - well worn and loved over the years.

For latest purchases, I've found the luminous green Wilkinson's range very handy...mainly because they have a handle that is slightly bent and it just makes it easier to work [and I have a dodgy elbow so perhaps it just suits me?].

I do tend to use a spade like PW says...the forks I use for...forking over the soil rather than any heavy work and breaking down clay lumps.
