  • Maximum/Minimum Thermometers

I'd like to get a couple of maximum/minimum thermometers to use outside (on a fence), in the mini greenhouse and in the house.

I've found these one's that seem quite reasonably priced but wondered if it is better to spend a little more and get better quality?

I've had dial ones, and they're not really accurate. Where you turn the dial to set the hands, they are one or two degrees apart.

These are better, but I haven't found one that is really weather-proof. I've been through four of these in two years:

They fill up with condensation and stop working

The ones that Two_sheds linked to are the ones we used to use in our laboratory to measure max and min temps in air and water....we used to hook them on a wire, and they stayed in water all the time. They get a bit grimy but as long as you can read the dial they should last a fair while.

I'm sure they have improved things and gone digital these days, but we used those for years.

If that was a double lizard max min, I'd have ordered it.

I do... I really do! I may have to find a place for it!

            Thanks everyone!

I have just sent the company an email to ask about pricing and delivery as they don't seem to show the prices on the website so finger's crossed I'm not in for a horrible shock!

There seems to be a similar one on the other website for £7.50 plus VAT so might give that a go if ordering direct from China proves a little too costly.

I've just bought this Vista window thermometer, and am enamoured with it:

              - it's German
              - it sticks to your window so you can view it from inside
              - it's made of glass, so doesn't scratch
              - it resets itself
              - it's much better quality than you'd think

Stay well clear of the mercury free gardman ones! they're worse than useless

I've got one like the Two-Sheds pic, and it's also my third one. It's not really accurate but at present I know how much to subtract from one side to get the true reading from the other. Will have birthday money soon so I'm going to look for something digital. I want it for inside the cold greenhouse.

I too have 2 of the one that Two_Sheds mentions. Both are a bit wrong - mainly through being dropped (by me).

Wilkinsons sell them at a very reasonable price.

I am also thinking of going digital..

I've got through about 10 of those which we all seem to have tried- I think I've paid between £6 and £10 for mine from various places.
I love the idea of them- I just wish someone could invent a weatherproof/drop resistant one!!!
I've got one in the house and one in the garden at the moment.

Mentioned the digital idea to Himself who offered it as a birthday present and immediately went on line to check on them. He's rather excited about it. Sad old pair, aren't we?

I had one which lasted about 6 years and then the replacement was rubbish and the one I bought to replace that rubbish too so am guessing quality has gone downhill.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My mercury one in the greenhouse has finally given up after 25 years so this thread is well worthwhile. Thanks.

                            LOTS on ebay.
