  • Wanted - Cheap seeds

I'm setting up my new beds, and have just bought:

    Radishes
    Spinach Beeet
    Carrots
    Beetroot
    Parsley

    Dwarf Beans
    Runner Beans
    Broad Beans

    Broccoli
    Cauliflower
    Cabbage
    Swede

    Sweet Corn
    Basil
    Lettuce
    Corriander

all for just £0.19 from Netto!!

But I'm still missing potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, peas, chinese cabbage, onions, leeks, garlic and spring onions.

Lots of places sell these seeds, but I'm on a tight budget. Anyone got any advice for cheap seeds (I'm not intending to seed-swap as I don't have enough, unless someone wants me to pick up more of the above for them from Netto!)?

Netto is the cheapest at 19p, they did have peas, leeks and spring onion because I bought some, might be worth popping back in to see if they have had more stock delivered in a few days.

Other than Netto, Lidl is good, 27p a pack, I know they stock tomatoes, peppers and onions, but I dont think they do Chinese Cabbage.

Failing that try Aldi, about 45p a packet.

As for the spuds, might be worth trying Freecycle as you will struggle to buy and chit this late in the year.

Garlic, you are too late or too early, needs to be started Autumn/Winter, but when the time is right you can always buy a bulb from a supermarket and sow it.

Both Poundland and Wilkos had plenty of seed potatoes left today.

Thanks for the offer. I posted my status on facebook that I was looking for old woodfor raised beds and someone offered me a load of fully grown tomatoes off his allotment! Ah the best price...Free!

I went to Wilkos yesterday, they have a whole shelf dedicated to seed potatoes that were stripped bare!

Thanks for all the suggestions, will defintely be trying Aldi, Lidl and Poundland. My main problem is I don't drive. So everything has to be on a bus route and carryable!

Is there a branch of Boyes discount stores near you? they sell seeds at 49p a packet, or there must be other dicount stores just shop around
My local DIY store is Focus. Their seeds are not dirt cheap, but cheaper than garden centres; 69p apacket I think, and I have always found them reliable, likewise their onion sets

For potatoes try asking local geengrocers if they have any eating ones that have got a bit too old , dried and generally too manky for sale. They would probably give you them, or sell very cheap. Also try agricultural merchants, they might have some seed potatoes left; a few kilos would not be enough for a farmer but probably enough for you

Incidentally, I am a cook, and we get 10kg packs of French charlotte salad potatoes. I always sort through them and pick out those that are too scuffed or marked to use. This gives me enough for a few rows, and they are always successful
