  • B&Q Orange buckets

I was reading a thread here yesterday about planting squashes in containers, and someone mentioned what a pity the cheap and otherwise excellent B&Q buckets only come in orange.

For those that don't know, if you go to the B&Q building section, you can get the same size bucket, at the same price, in black too. Not particularly attractive, but slightly less bold and conspicuous if colour schemes are important to you!

    Have fun!

I have 6, both orange and black, and I drilled drainage holes in them, so I could use them as planters. Only I didn't tell my OH about the holes, which could hardly be seen in the black ones - guess what comes next!

Wickes do a 14l builders bucket for 95p (and it's black!).

I'd just been to Homebase and they were £2.99 in there. Grabbed 10 and walked round the rest of the shop grinning like a mad-woman!

Courgettes and squash now happily re-homed!

If you're worried about aesthetics then this won't apply, but if not why not approach your local pub, coffee shop, restaurant for unwanted empty catering buckets (of mayo etc). I find they're only too happy to get rid of them, and I get loads of buckets for free! I have spuds in some, carrots and salads in others.
A good beginning is half the work.

Last year ikea did gardening bags which were big enough for spuds they were being sold off for 49p, they are the same material that those tartan huge shopping bags are but funky colours and when you have finished with them you can squish them down into very small space. They will probablly do something similar this year too. I also tried their big blue bags which are about 39p to grow cut and come again lettuce and radishes in and they worked well, though of course they are bright blue.

also the trays that the suppliers deliver their veg in are handy, i line them with plastic and they hold about 10 pots.

The blue plastic boxes that Mushroom come in are great for holding produce and pots.

I bought 10 builders buckets here in France year before last. Rubbery sort so not brittle in the sun. Removed the handles - which I now use as supports for mini cloches - and drilled out the bottoms, now use for things like swap spuds, overwintering parsnips etc etc.

Also use old water butts the same way, cut in half crossways, drilled out bottoms and then used for HSL seeds and beans.
