Hi, Would like to make our own veggie crisps as ones in shops cost an arm and a leg, could you suggest a modern deep fat fryer as they are safer to use than old style chip pan, can tell my brother is a firefighter! Cheers

I have one of those stainless steel ones, had it ages, was an arm and a leg at the time, but they are cheaper now, its hasnt got filters etc in it, but you can strip it down to wash it, its oblong in shape has a large basket so you can get fish in etc, i prefer it to these with the lid that clips shut and you have to wait until the timer says its done !

Another suggestion to consider if you dont do much deep frying is to bake them instead. The hardest bit with crisps is probably slicing them thinly and evenly which a mandolin is great at, after that, brush/spray with oil and bake. This means you could use flavoured oil (parsnip crisps in chilli oil, yum !), fresh each time and they would of course be lower in fat but just as nice. Oh, and you wouldnt have to find cupboard space for yet another gadget ;-)odd notes about our kitchen garden project:
