Hiya Soobeth, are you asking for a good brand of laptop? I think LJ bought one recently so may be able to pass one some of the things she found when she was looking

Sorry, I'm not doing too well this morning... I think it has a lot to do with the fact that our friends left our house at 4am this morning

Yes Shortie I have bought a laptop recentlly. With the wi-fi it cost about £600 and I don't like it. So I am now looking to buy another one and I will up my budget to £1000 but at that price it needs to be perfect so I am not rushing.

We've two laptops - an old Thinkpad (TP600 - love it!) and a Toshiba Tecra.

The Thinkpad is now used mainly for surfing the Net as its processor and RAM are a bit 'small'. But it is really well built and user friendly - good size screen and not too heavy.

The Toshiba was a newer purchase, but I made the mistake of ending up with a machine that is very noisy - the fan is on constantly. I think its because its not actually a 'mobile' processor but an ordinary pc cpu, so it runs hot and hence the fan is nearly always on.

One of the problems I have with laptops is unlike pcs they are often difficult to fix yourself. Where do all those screws go back! So I did get a 3 year warranty on the Tosh (which I've needed more than once).

But its very convenient to use a laptop in the lounge, sitting on the sofa watching the tv - so they get my vote overall! I've even surfed in the greenhouse at the bottom of the garden thanks to wi-fi!

Mine is a panasonic toughbook and whilst not strictly a laptop it is fantastic.

As with most things buy the best you can afford but only with the features you need!

Laptops a virtually sealed units....Unlike a PC you cant upgrade them..(easily).

You could add some more RAM and Swapp the HDD but thats it.

If you have kids they are no good for games as the Graphic cards are not DirectX9C.

I would recommend looking at Sony...HP...Toshiba...Apple (good for Graphics)..and then Dell. Dont even look at cheap ones like Advent.

I would also pay the extra for 3 year next day warranty. On our work HP Laptop if it goes up the clunge UPS come the next day and take it to the hosp.

Also Batts are consumerable items so look after them. If you are running it on mains take out the batt or. plug in the mains till the batt is charged then unplug and run it off the batt.

The batts usally only have 1000 charge cycles ( even Lit-ion) All the time you are on mains they are charging and is charging in the background using up your 1000 charges.

Our laptop is a DELL which we got just after last Christmas and haven't had a ny problems with it (the wireless bit was a bit difficult to set up but has been fine ever since). Went for this one as they were doing some very good deals and already had one of their desktops which has never been problematic. Suppose it depends what you use them for, this one is mainly for surfing / mailing etc so we didn't need a large amount of memory but if you also want to play games then it's a whole different story and I think you need to pay more.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

The only thing I have against dell is in both their PC and laptop they use special power units. So if you goes you have to send it back to them. The power supply in the boys PC went the other day and I poped to the Computer Fair and picked one up for £10 I couldn't have done it will a Dell. But the new Dell widescreen Laptops are well sexie.

Fortunately not had that problem, NOG - now need to find some wood to grab hold of! Having said that, even if it did go wrong I wouldn't have a clue what to do even if I could pick up the part - am pretty good on the using front but totally clueless on what's inside the box.

Hello Soobeth, I'm not really sure about your question so maybe you want to repost it. I have a dell laptop - wireless - and it's great for me but might not be suitable for what you need. Come back with your question and we'll try to help.

I am getting it second hand for free from my mums good friend. Is it possible with broadband to get a extension cable for the Internet. Any other tips are gratefully received.

If you have wireless broadband you can buy a wireless adapter that fits in either the USB socket or the PCMIA slot on the side. I use a laptop for work & both my son & daughter have them as well. But they are limited to the upgrades that you can do on them.
