  • Glass bottles and jars

The best place for buying these, in a whole range of sizes and colours, is an ebay site called colorlites.
I've been using them for a couple of years now, they are reasonably priced, and the service is second to none.
Do give them a try if you need anything for your chutneys, jams and oils and vinegars!

Am trying to find some small preserving jars suitable for canning at the moment, preferably about 250ml but am really struggling. Have quite a lot of 500ml / 1l ones but don't always want that much. Anybody got any ideas?

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Try the link Alison - if you can't see what you want, they will check for you. I had the same problem as you and found just what I was looking for. They charge reasonable prices, and they are super quick at sending out your order.

Thanks DDL - will look again. Had a quick look earlier but I was at work so rushing a bit and could have missed what I wanted.

We keep all screw top Jars that we use and friends give us their empties and we give them a refill every now and then.

We must eat less than 10% of the Jam we make. We gave the washing machine man a jar and he didn't charge us......he was only in the house 20 mins and fixed the problem saw all the jam and got talking so we gave him a jar and then one for his mum...and no money changed hands......Big smile

If you need to buy jam jars, then I would reccomend contacting your local beekeeping society.

My cousin is a professional beekeeper with over 100 hives on the go and he along with his local society bulk buy their jars together to get massive discounts.

Yesterday I drove to his place and collected 720 jars for myself and other allotment holders. They are 1lb jars with a white plastic screw lids and even allowing for my petrol, they have come in at 25p per jar.

They find the plastic lids far better as there is no chance of rust or tarnish that they got from the gold coloured metal lids.

Also wish I had taken my Ford Galaxy with me as opposed to OH's Pug 307 as while talking he told me that they also bulk buy a bee food from Sweden and it comes in those 1000ltr tanks (IBC?), they have trouble getting rid of the empties and he would have loaded one of those on for me as a water tank for the allotment. Still I know for next time.

He is going to find the prices for other sized jars and bottles for me as what ever they order, the discount is applied to the whole order. If there is anything I want then he will add it to their next order for me.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I placed anorder with the company listed by Bernie - and here's a tip !
If you wanna order more than 60 jars, do it in a split order - I priced for 120 and 25 bottles and the postage was horrendous - cost of two lots of 60 and 25 bottkles was a lot cheaper as they use a different courier when the weight exceeds a certain amount.

Thanks for this Bernie, OH has just received a box of shaped jars from this company, the company bent over backwards, I almost had to stop them putting it in their car then and there, they were so eager.
These were the jars she got (I bought) Colorlites Ltd :: Food Jars :: Food Jars -Shaped :: 212ml Clear Orcio Jar c/w 63 T/O Gold Lid Boxed in 72's she denies it was because they looked cute
