  • Rice Cooker recommendations?

    Hi Gang!

Just went into the kitchen to serve up Mr D's tea as he's just come in from work, only to find that our Rice Cooker has stopped working! We got it about 3 years ago from Ikea, it was basic and fairly cheap, but cooks rice to perfection (yes, I know you can cook rice in a pan, but a proper Rice Cooker really does make a difference to the results of the rice)

Anyone any recommendations as to a replacement? If no-one does then we'll probably try Ikea again, as it was very good for the money, but if there's a better one that others have personal experience of then we'll take a look!

    Many thanks in advance!
    Blessings

The best I can offer is to send Mr E round to give you a quick refresher! His rice is excellent. Must be the time he spent working in kitchens and with a caterer father.

We have one of the tefal three layer electric steamers which came with a rice/stock bowl and cooks the rice really well, I would say as well as a dedicated rice cooker but with the advantage you can cook the rest of the meal above it

Lol EB, I think I need it! I used to be able to do rice no probs on the stove, even getting complemented on it, but I managed to burn it last night (must be the shock of becoming MOM, well at least thats my excuse! lol!) and now have the pan soaking!

I've seen that one, looks good! There's a few that have a steamer functioon too, the one I fancy is the Cuisinart one (it matches the other stuff in the kitchen and is the same shape as our Magimix Food Processor), it also steams and slow cooks (tho we have a slow cooker already, so that isnt really necessary), anyone any experience with it? There's a link to it here!

You don'yt need a rice maker! Honest!

Seriously! I've tried to cook rice for the last 20+ years - and was c**p! until now! I've even tried rice makers and made rice pudding!
Try Delias recipe - if it works for me - it can for you!

150ml level in a glass jug long grain rice
          Boiling water or stock 275ml
          1/2oz butter
          salt

Melt butter gently in a solid pan then add the rice and mix well. Add the stock or water, stir once until liquid comes to the boil then turn down the heat and put on the lid.
Leave it alone for 15minutes (yes, it's hard, but it works!). Then take off the lid and stir - the rice should be cooked. Taste a few grains and if there is a little liquid left, then put the lid on and cook for a few more minutes.

DDL Tip: Try adding turmeric and crushed cardamdmon pods ('scue spelling!) DELISH!

It WORKS! Honest! DDL - let me know how you get on!

1 rice to 2 water, little pinch of salt, put together when cold, put lid on, bring to boil, simmer on low, ready when all the waters been absorbed by rice (see Madar Jafferys cookery books). I never stir my rice 'cause my mammy told me thats what makes it go sticky, if you get you measures about right n then just leave it alone it'll be fine. Also good if you add a knob of butter and some chopped onion when still cold for a sweet rich flavoured rice. Have used carroway (sp!) aswell for nice flavour. I like your tumeric and cardomon DDL will think I'll give that a try next time (maybe for tea, I feel a curry craving coming on ).

you could always buy Uncle Bens boil in the bag

My wife bought a thing from tupperware (is it still going?) that you put the rice in added water & then nuked for x minutes in the microwave then left it to stand & it way cooked. Worked great ..... till I melted it by accident some how

                I make perfect rice, honest!

                One cup of rice (basmati)
                two cups cold of water
                pinch of salt

Put everything in the pot uncovered and bring to the boil, when it starts to boil cover tightly with tin foil and a lid and turn down to a simmer. Time for 11 mins turn of heat and let sit for 1 min.

                Perfect every time
