  • Seed Catalogues

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best seed catalogues to get?

So far I have ordered catalogues from Thomson & Morgan, Suffolk Herbs, Chase Organics and Victoriana Nursery Gardens!

    TIA!

Personally I don't like T&M much as I find them a bit commercial and glossy pics but a lot of people love them. I got most of last year's seeds from Kings but supplemented them with a few treats from Real Seeds (I love their stuff) and I also quite like Nicky's Nurserys and a few others. I also picked up the odd pack from Wilkos, Lidls etc but prefer to do most of my order in the comfort of my own home without getting drawn into impulse buys for things I don't need / will never grow - have done that far too much!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Definitely get the Kings Seeds catalogue. I'm not that keen on Thompson & Morgan, they used to be very good but I've been very disappointed in the last few years.

        Seed.

The ones I really Recommend, cos I've used them are...

King's Seeds (Kingseeds - Home) Small range, excellent value for money, part of Suffolk Seeds.

DT Browns Seeds (D.T. Brown's) Small range, cheap, good value
Unwins (Buy Vegetable Seeds, Flower Seeds & Plants and Seed Potatoes from Unwins) not so good these days in my opinion.

Mr Fothergills (http://www.fothergills.co.uk/) Good range, got a lot better over the years.

Plants of Distinction - producer and supplier of specialist seeds and plants I highly recommend these especially for tomato varieties.

Marshalls Seeds (Marshalls Seeds: Buy Vegetable Seeds, Veg Plants & Seed Potatoes, Raised Bed Kits, UK Suppliers) good veg range.

Chiltern Seeds (Chiltern Seeds rare flower heirloom veg and herbs - Chiltern Seeds secure online shop) Huge range but doesn't state numbers of seed per packet, real unusual stuff, think you have to pay £2 for a catalogue, next one free if you order, but check website.!

Not used these but they are recommended.

        Seed-By-Size (SEEDS-BY-SIZE INDEX 2008/2009)
        Simpsons's Seeds (Simpson's Seeds & Plants)
Edwin Tucker & Sons at Tuckers Seeds - Gardeners, Growers
Home - moreveg.co.uk, vegetable seed company, vegetable seed, herb seed, flower seed, carrot, do smaller packets of stuff.

That lot should keep you busy for a while.

I can go along with Pdblake's recommendation for the Real Seed Catalogue. Genuine gardeners selling proper old fashioned seeds. I like Victoriana too and have found them helpful when needed. I go along with the people who don't like T & M. Too big, too commercial and if they haven't got something shown in their catalogue you can get really messed about.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

That's great! Have gone and ordered some more catalogues!

I really liked the Real Seeds website - seem lovely, genuine and passionate people! I also enjoyed the Victoriana catalogue, so will probably order something from these two at least.

I agree with the T&M comments - it does seem a very commercial catalogue and doesn't have the same friendly feel as the other ones.

I can see some very long lists being made in the coming months! My plot's nowhere near cleared yet, but already I'm begining to think it's going to be too small!

                Thanks!

I tend not to look through seed catalogues now as I get lawed into all the pretty pictures and how great things look - result - end up buying far too much.

I had to throw away loads of seed catalogues. I now buy online what I need, a few days before I need it. No random purchases = no clutter!

I use Wallis Seeds in Essex for most of my seeds, they've always been good value, plain packaging, no nonsense, and I think they now have a website.
