  • Halogen Oven

    I am thinking of buying a halogen oven to reduce our power consumption, and I'd appreciate some advice from any grape who has one. Looking at the technical spec the oven from Cooper's of Stortford, which is 11.5 lt and is fan-assisted, would seem to be the best bet. Do they really cook in the time stated in the ads? Are they as difficult to clean as some folks say? I'd be grateful for any and all advice. Thanks peeps.

    Anna, I don't use the oven in my cooker but I do use a Remoska oven (from Lakeland). Never used a halogen oven before but did consider it before buying the Remoska. The Remoska is very economical to run and I use it almost every day, not hard to clean (quick wipe down of the lid - heating element is in the lid), wipe down of the silicon lining in the base (I bought silicon lining sheets from Lidl). Do not buy the small version, we have the Grand size (only hubby and I) but you can't fit chickens etc in the small size.

      Thanks, FF. I want to bake bread in an alternative to an ordinary oven. Is the Remoska big enough for that, and would it do that? Another reason for choosing a halogen oven over a Remoska is the price. I can buy the Cooper's 11.5lt oven for £45 inc. postage - I believe the Remoska is a tad more expensive than that. How does it rate on fuel consumption vis a vis the halogen oven? Sorry to come back with so many more questions!

        Anna, I cook most things in my Remoska including bread, muffins, rice pud, sponges, scones plus the usual savoury foodstuffs. The Remoska is extremely energy efficient, meant to more efficient than halogens. The drawback is the price (don't know the current price but I paid about £100), I don't regret buying the Remoska but I did have to save up. Other issue is can you get delivery to the Isle of Luing?

        Just Googled the current price £119.99 - flamin' Nora! I have to say whilst I love my Remoska I would go for a halogen, it's still energy efficient and £120 is an awful lot of money for an oven.

          Yes, 'flaming Nora' was my reaction too! I think it will be the deciding factor.

            Forgot to say that a friend on the mainland allows us to use his address for anything delivered by carrier, so no probs there except for the huge fee everyone seems to slap on if you live north of Glasgow!

              I love my halogen oven and now use it all the time. The only problem is the hindge lid and the unit will not fit on my table top as the hight is an issue.

              Must be one of my best buys.

                I'm still considering getting one...I started a thread a while back,moaning about my titchy built in oven1
                Up until recently I'd only seen them for sale in mail order catalogues,but recently saw one in The range.Think it was about £45.(?)

                  I've got the Cooper's Halogen table-top and it's worked fine. My oven was useless and I couldn't afford to replace it so hence the Halogen. It does take up a lot of room but I've managed to squeeze it in. It's relatively easy to clean as it has a cleaning mode, you add water and a squidge of w u liquid and off it goes having a good whirl round.

                  I've not found much time difference in cooking, bread's been a bit problematic, a large loaf was not a good idea - perhaps I should buy the extending collar that Cooper's have available. And I don't have a small muffin tray so not able to make them at the moment or for obvious reasons french sticks.

                  I'm sure it does save money but not if you're batch cooking? I often make a 12 egg pound cake mixture which makes 3 cakes and I have to cook them one after the other for an hour each, in a proper oven they'd all go in together. Same with other batch recipes.

                  However as a solution to my oven problem it has been a lifesaver.

                    Hi Sue, it is the Cooper's oven which attracts me - price, size, fan-assisted. I'm mostly cooking just for the two of us and tend to make rolls rather than loaves, so that should not be a problem. I have not seen this collar advertised; what does it do?
                    I have more time to think about it now anyway since the car had its MOT yesterday and needs a sizeable whack of money spent on it.

                      Never used a halogen oven but it looks interesting - mind you, so did the Remoska that is sitting in the cupboard, never used!

                        Hi Anna
                        The collar is in an extra pack of "bits" I didn't get, all it is is a stainless steel ring that you put on the top of the cooker base then fit the lid back on, it thus gives you an extra 4" or so of headroom, especially good for roast chickens I hear.

                        I think there was a toastrack and a warming tray as well but didn't feel up to spending another £14 or so.

                        I was hankering after a remoska as well, got as far as the cookbook but the price differential meant I went for the halogen instead. Between this, the microwave, the gas rings, the slow cooker and the bread machine manage most of the cooking I would have done in the oven, just miss a nice tray of muffins every now and then, especially as I've now got 7 pumpkins to eat up.

                            The collar sounds a good idea, Sue but it's too much to add on at the moment.
                            I have gone ahead and ordered the Cooper's oven - well, impulse buying is all the excitement I get!
                            Is it not possible to cook muffins in it?
