  • Anyone make their own mince?

    Hi,

My OH has just been washing the worm gear of my meat grinder and complained that it isn't good to use it since it is made from aluminium.

He has offered to buy me a new mincer if I can find one with all stainless steel mechanism.

Any grapes able to recommend such a beast for me please?

    Cheers folks
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

Can't help you I'm afraid. I've got one of the old fashioned ones with the handle that my Gran gave me.I don't know what it is made of. Great things they are.

      Hi STG
Have a look at Ascott Smallholding Supplies website - they have two models of mincers - one for domestic and one for professional use. One is about £50, the other is over £200.
      Hope this helps

Is the old Spong aluminium or steel? I always assumed it was stainless - there are usually plenty for sale on eBay.

It is the 'worm' thingy that drives the meat towards the mincer blade which is aluminium. It is starting to degrade and OH is concerned that it is not good to use it any more.

Thanks for the info SR - have contacted Ascott to see if the mechanism in their mincer is stainless steel.

Do you own a kenwood? The mincing attachment/worm you are talking about is a very thick plastic. Works well. I use mine loads.

Now there's a thought!! MIL has one that never sees the light of day - wonder if I could scrounge it!! I like making my own mince and sausages since you know just what is in them then. Thanks for that suggestion!

I think they also do a sausage attachment. Never made my own so can't give an opinion on it
