  • Best place to get wood for raised beds?

    Hi,

My allotment is very lumpy and bumpy and so I want to put raised beds in. Where is the best place to get the wood? DO I really have to spend a fortune at B&Q?

You need to dig around for local woodyards - my local one delivered 180 metres of 6"x1" tanalised timber to the lottie site for £249.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

And reclaim yards often have fresh wood for sale and you can cut it there to the lengths you want.

Do you have a wood recycling company near you? We have one round the corner and they're cheap as chips.

I have heard that scaffolders have to replace old boards now and then for safety reasons. They sell them very cheap if not for free. Obviously, they dont come treated though.

Just look around for anyone doing a loft conversion. There are plenty of rafters and joists that they discard. Unless you speak to them beforehand, I'm afraid a bit of skip-diving is the order of the day!
It takes a while to remove the nails and to cut to size but it's free and does the trick.

We had a lorry load delivered to our site for about £100. It worked out a pound per board

                  Check out Freecycle.

I've got about an estate car full of the discarded floorboards from a café which was replacing it's entire floor.

I must be so lucky having a scaffolder living in our street. He gave me all of mine.

We had no luck re scaffolding boards but found timbr with none toxic preservative from Wickes in a pack which worked out quite economical though that was a year ago and i can't remember how much i paid now, it is late!!
