  • Washing machine help???

Our third second hand machine has given up the ghost and we are finally giving in to the idea that a new one will be cheaper in the long run.

Can anyone offer any tips of choosing a new machine, it's mind boggling!!

We are a household of 6 on a smallholding so it needs to be pretty big, we have a utility room so size of the machine isn't a prob it doesn't have to fit in a gap in the kitchen.

A friend told me to get a dyson one off ebay, but another told me they are rubbish, also I think we do need to go new as we've been having such terrible luck, aaarrrggghhh, too many choces!!!

    Hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllp

A top tip I was given by a repair man is to NOT go for the biggest load washer, because they don't make the casing any bigger, just the drum, and so you have much more chance of breakdowns from things getting wedged in the small gap and vibration problems because there isn't room for the damping. Also was told that anything above a 1400rpm spin is a waste of money, it doesn't get the clothes any drier, and adds to the load on the motor.

I have a Zanussi 1400 spin, had it for 2 years, no problems so far.

This is probably not the most fashionable make but I have had two indesits
The 1st one lasted for nine years with a family of 6 - it was just a basic one. I have a similar one now and so far have had it for 6 years - it aint pretty and its basic but definately a workhorse. Oh and not too expensive either.
I was advised years ago after buying a blooper of a washer-dryer by the repair man not to buy anything with a computer in it (err if you get what I mean and so far this is true....

Used to have a Beko, it finally gave up after a fair few years. I wash every day, so it was well used. Never needed a repair. Then I bought a Whirlpool last year - what a disaster, had one repair already. Hate the bleeding thing. Doesn't spin as good as my cheapo Beko, it's temperamental(sp?) and the wash cycles take over 2 hours Don't buy a Whirlpool.

I had a Blomberg which was superb and now have a Bosch as I couldn't get another Blomberg (Bosch made for another store). I would deffo go for the highest spin you can get - it really does make a difference to how long things take to dry.

Check the door lock is metal not plastic and that there is not a big gap between the rubber seal and the drum.

Dont buy a washer/ dryer you cant wash and dry at the same time, drying cycle takes for ever, you have to take some clothes out before the dry cycle starts. Easy to shrink or stretch things. I have just got a second hand beko from niece, dont like it but it will have to do as beggers cant be choosers. Havent got to grips with it yet and I dont feel clothes are washed properly, if I wash on a different number at 40 it takes 2 hours.

My Sister's advice was go for the cheapest new one and pay for extra warranty! She did this and it never went wrong.

I bought an Admiral Capacity Plus (10.2Kg) (American Washer) around 2-3 yrs ago on Comet's Clearance site which is operated as an auction. Only downside - perhaps a bit noisy?

Got this £6-700 'monster' for around £250 incl delivery. Needed to take off not only a door but also its frame to get to its desired position! OMG. Do measure carefully peeps!

Very simple action (central paddle), relies on 'own' supply for hot water so no heating and furring inside, huge capacity allows for a Double Winter weight quilt to be washed - I used to use bathtub and tread thru rinses etc in summer - too old these days for that! Be honest - how many of those weird and wonderful separate wash varieties do you really 'need' to use?

Made by same comp as Maytag which usually supplies laundrettes (spelling?).

There's not much the 'yanks' dish out that I particularly like - but this take on a US lifestyle I love! Maybe not the best on energy usage etc - but in my house there is a definite saving on doing less loads during the week and no doubt saving on the leccy.

If you have a large household this has to be in the running. I don't know who could supply this now as I don't think Comet stock - but even at full price it would be worth considering as it relieves the launderess no end of grief. Just do internet search?

It does a big load, its quiet, and because you can't see in through the door, you don't waste half the day watching your washing going round and round (I don't mind admitting I'm guilty of doing that).
