One word - Miele - everything else is second best

i agree with the above, you pay a bit more but it will last you 20 years no problem, i recently bought one from john lewis with a 10 year parts and labour guarantee, even the delivery man said i'd chosen the best and probably wouldnt have to use the guarantee.

I know this may sound silly, but my old Hoover machine indicated which stage in the wash/rinse/spin stage it was at. The machine I have now only shows washing and finished washing.

As I said I know this might sound silly, but if the machine indicates at what stage it is, you have some idea when it will be finished.

I hope you understand what I've tried to say.

Well I ended up getting a reconditioned dyson at a very knockdown price, lets hope it lives up to the hype.
It does look like a space capsule which I like lots!
Off to plumb it in now, will let you all know if it eats all my knickers in its weird two drum contra rotation system!!!
