  • Pepper mill recommendations, please?

    Hi everyone,

Our pepper mill is a bit pathetic. It bluntly overgrinds peppercorns into a fine powder. Can anyone recommend a good mill, which grinds sufficiently and efficiently, but not too much?

    Many thanks

Hi Caro, I Have some Cole & Mason salt and pepper grinders. They were bought for us some 18 years ago as an engagement pressie, and there still going strong. I've had a look on the tinternet and there not the cheapest you can get, but if you get 18 years out of them, there worth every penny.

        We've something similar:

        Detail

Very easy to use, easy to set the fine/coarse grind, and it's got it's own little stand (how cute). Not sure if ours is the eact same one, but it looks it.

However, in searching for the details of our pepper grinder I found this:

Don't get one of the battery operated ones, they're rubbish and don't work for long. Good old hand grind is much better, we too have Cole and Mason ones (bought half price in BHS as I remember) and I do like the fact you can change the coarse / fine thing.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for that Alison - I'd been vaguely toying with the notion, but wondered whether they'd be up to scratch. Now I know, without wasting my money!

I'm thinking about getting the Cole & Mason Inverta mills. Can anyone tell me if there's any difference between "Spin" and "Flip" apart from shape?

Also I thought I'd get 3 - 1 pepper, 1 salt and 1 for chilli flakes. They seem to be adjustable so work from pepper corns right down to herbs. OMG - just thought - does that mean I could put WHOLE chillies in there ??? (Doesn't take much to make me happy ). So, if anyone thinks it's a rubbish idea, can you let me know?

              Many thanks

I'd have to totally disagree with you there

Seriously, the G'rabbit (pepper grinder) is really good: one handed operation, refill it by taking the tail off. Cute, and it works well.

I used to have a rabbit but its ears fell off.

I've also got a battery operated one and have had it for over 5 years; it's needed new batteries about 3 times but it still works....and I use it every day.

Can you adjust the settings on your original one Caro, to make it coarser - there should be a little knob to turn to make the space between the grinders bigger.

After getting frustrated with a few quite expensive pepper mills, I bought a Mosimann's grind fresh spice mill filled with rainbow peppercorns a few years ago. Can't remember if it was from Lidl, Aldi or Tesco or Morrison's but I refill it with black peppercorns and it grinds beautifully - not too fine and not too coarse.

My sister swears by Cole and Mason. Someone bought us a really nice battery operated grinder (not C&M) about five years. At the time, I smiled politely and thought it looked pointless. Totally wrong - love it and as Andrea says, we've replaced the batteries twice, use it every day, it's put up with countless people trying to twist/grind it, and it's great.

When it finally does need replacing - I'll get the same one again.

I'm just about to order new pepper and salt mills too, as ours are nearly at the end of their life (wedding present 22 years ago!). Decided on Cole & Mason, and Lakeland currently have a Buy One Get One Free on them - I baulked at the price (I am from Yorkshire!), but I reckon you get what you pay for with these.

I've just ordered the Cole & Mason "Inverta Twist" from cookware-online (listed as a C&M supplier. 3 of them - pepper, salt, and chilli flake!

They may not have been buy 1 get 1 free, but then they're a lot cheaper than the big wooden ones, and there was a couple of pounds off. I also love the idea of being able to adjust how coarse/fine you want it.

So thanks to everyone for their input - I'd have dithered over this for another few weeks, otherwise!
