  • Suitcase or Wheely Holdall?

    Hi,
Have done a search but nothing came up. I need advice on what to buy. I have tried both & bust both (well not me personally but airport bods).....anyhows, what do you use or advise. Although I don't need it till June, I thought I would try & get in while the sales are on (me being a tight yorkie an' all). I am always scepticle about sale prices i.e Debenhams have holdalls down from 125 to 30.........Now 125 for a holdall seems steep to me.

My little bruv travels 1000's miles in is job & he always uses something like this
Arundel large wheeled multi compartment holdall - Tesco.Direct

he says there is not point in spending loads of dosh on something which is literally chucked from pillar to post by handling staff.

We have a soft holdall with a padded shoulderstrap for airport use- we've had so many with smashed wheels that we gave up!

        Or lost potentially.

In my experience I'd opt for the holdall too, or if you go down the cabin bag route aim for one with widely set wheels or the longest handle you can find. Being rather lofty like me, you'll find that they "rock" as you pull them along. This is down to the fact that the taller you are the more upright the bag will be when pulling it, throwing it's centre of balance off. It's worse the lighter your bag, and given the cabin allowance is only around 10kg on many carriers it's quite likely you'll experience this. The longer the bag/handle, the less likely this is to happen.

However, bear in mind that if you are planning to take it on as hand luggage, it'll have to fit within certain dimensions.

On numerous occasions I've found myself just carrying the bladdy thing across the airport rather than it rocking from wheel to wheel.

Well HW - I'm only 5'2" but my small case on wheels still rocks from side to side!

You can really hurt your wrist trying to steady it as you pull it along and I find that the faster I walk the worse the rocking gets - so don't try running for a train or anything!

Depends on how you feel about carrying the weight of the case as opposed to pulling it along. But I wouldn't pay a lot for it either, they get mega bashed about as has been said before.

Just to muddy the waters, I say wheeled suitcase. We have several, and each and every one is much better than the wheeled hold-alls we have. I find it's the hold-alls that wobble and fall over, not the suitcases.

Also, go for hard-shelled if poss. You then stand a chance of your bottle of aftershave surviving.

Debenhams have some great savings in their Blue Cross Sale. For example, if it's cabin-sized, they have a Tripp reduced from 109 to 39 Black superlite cabin suitcase - Suitcases - Luggage - Home -

Tripp are a good make, although other brands are available

It's true though, you get what you pay for.

              good luck

Thanks Caro, I have been flitting between Debs & Tripps sites as they have the same bags with different prices, some of the Tripp prices are cheaper than Debs......strange.

Don't want to confuse you but my wheeled holdall tries to break my wrist every time I use it - bl**dy thing is useless.

As a Londoner, a tube traveller and a frequent flyer, those wheelie things should be banned! They are pulled along at the pace of a snail, holding other travellers up and causing frustration to everyone else.

I use a soft holdall, been all over the world and never had any problems. My advice is: If you can't carry it, don't take it.

Not very positive and a bit of a rant I know but those wheels really get my goat.

Hi Pumpy, sorry to appear daft. Are you talking about the airport trollys or the wheels on the case. I take it you prefer holdalls to suitcases?
