My new suitcase has 4 wheels on the base and is very manoeverable - I can spin it round 360 degrees. Taking it through the airport I could either run it along tilted or upright (with the laptop bag perched on top). Got it in Debenhams sale half price.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Have you tried TK Maxx, there lots of cases and holdalls to chose from and there much cheaper than in Debenhams, M&S or most other places come to think of it.

OK, I know what that sounded like, just thinking aloud so to speak .

I'm talking about those bags that have a pull up handle and a couple of wheels at the back.

They are disliked by a lot of people, not just me, you know how some people dislike, say, caravans? (Not picking on caravan owners here, just an example) Well those pull up handle bags get pulled along, then stop because the stairs are there, then the owner has to put down the handle, lift it (assuming they can) or ask someone else to do it for them. In the meantime, there is half a tube train trying to get to work behind them. Once at the top/bottom of the stairs, handle up again, ticket in barrier machine, person gets through, bag gets stuck, by this time another train has come in and yet more people are delayed. See now why I dislike them?

Actually when one is annoying me, I think of how great it would be to become Emporer Pumpkin (you lot could still call me Pumpy if you wanted) and then I would be able to go around cutting the handles off or maybe pulling one of the wheels off so that it wobbles, then the owner would wish that they had travelled a bit lighter.

Meanwhile back in the real world, I use a sports bag, fits in an overhead locker as hand luggage and if its a work trip, laptop comes as well. I can pack everything in there and if its too heavy, something gets taken out.

Trollies are supplied at all major railway stations and airports so I really can't see the need to have these pull along holdall things.
Another point, I don't think they look very "Manly" either.

But each to their own and I am not Emporer yet!

People pulling wheelie cases on the tube are a nuisance. Constantly stopping and holding up the tide and why can't they understand that they don't fit through the ticket barriers?

Most of the rucsac manufacturers and outdoor equipment firms also make holdalls; sometimes they call them cargo bags. Have a look round a few shops or surf the Net
A few of the major brands are; Lowe Alpine, The North Face, Berghaus, Karrimor
The full retail price can be quite expensive, so shop around and look in the sales

In the end we bought two cheap wheeled suitcases from Sainsbugs. They're the sort with two wheels at the bottom and an extendable handle coming out of the back, or a fixed handle on the top. The smallest is the perfect size for cabin luggage and I can pack a surprising amount into it (including a pair of long boots for an evening out in Edinburgh - much to my collegue's surprise!) .

You can get a wire mesh cover for rucsacs and holdalls, to prevent people cutting into them and stealing the contents
The covers would also provide extra support and prevent the straps & buckles from flapping around and getting caught

When my sister and I went to London on the train she had to carry her case and mine was one with wheels, she could hardly carry it, it was so heavy, I would rather have one with wheels
                              Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
                              and ends with backache
