I was first inspired to start growing edibles by Monty Don's Complete Gardener - I still refer back to it for advice, and think it's a lovely book to look at & read.
My current faves are Monty Dons complete gardner and sara raven the great vegetable plot. Only got the latter last weekend.
Have planted some red and blue potatoes this year on her reccomendation
I planted some red potatoes (a very dark, Scottish one - can't remember the name) about 5 years ago. I still get volunteers all over the place. They are so dark I can't see them against the soil so any little left over baby grows on again next year. Alien Invasion!
I am totally addicted to books - gardening or otherwise!
The best guide to growing vegetables I have found is Joy Larkom's "growing vegetables".
It's not glossy, there are no colour pictures, but it is incredibly comprehensive and pragmatic (and cheap!)
I have used all the books (no, really!) - Geoff Hamilton, Tichmarsh, RHS, Hessayon, organic, non-organic, Bob Flowerdew, Sarah Raven, Pippa Greenwood... blah blah blah
I grow veggies in pots and the ground, in a shadowed suburban garden. Joy Larkom's unassuming paperback has proved invaluable to me.
p.s. I have a deep aversion to Dr.Hessayon in every way. Each time a Grape mentions his books, I wince
