Hunters - are they worth it?

I spend a lot of time in wellies, what with garden and horses.....Hunters look great but in wear terms they are c**p IMO. The seem to tear or split around the ankle in my case. Get a cheap pair from the market and spend a few quid on some good insoles (and drop big hints for a pair of cashmere socks as pressie) to keep your feet warm.

Cheaper than Hunters (and I have worn out two pairs of them), about £50 from our local farm supply. A neighbour has been planting trees in Ennerdale last week and he joked that his feet were the only warm thing in the entire volunteer group (and if you know Ennerdale and West Cumbria you'll appreciate how cold it has been recently).

Sound good but there is no way I'd pay £50 for lottie boots - my riggers were free from work about 15 years ago and still going strong

How is it that riggers or ugg boots worn by a woman looks sexy, yet when I wear mine I look like a tramp?

Thanks for all the recommendations - some interesting choices. It's interesting to see that warmth seems to be the biggest concern for most people - but as I've said, it's not mine. I have high blood pressure so am always warm, and me feet are so far away from my head that by the time it registers that they are cold (which never happens) I'm likely to be at home anyway.

I did look at the Muck Bootz (sp?) - they sell them at our local garden centre, but they were'nt that comfortable for me - a bit narrow across the foot - and having read reviews on them with people mentioning things like taht fact they'd not waterproof (on account of being largely neoprene) and that they snag on brambles etc.

As I said, I think I'll just make do with my slightly uncomfortable Dunlops - it's not like I wear them day in, day out. I've now spent the money on a back rack anyways.

I have Hunters and you can buy fleece liners for them. Daughter has them for when she's mucking out at the farm. You can buy an upped quality Hunter nearing 200 squids. Also Barbour do a good welly range but unless you are up to your eyes in mud daily, or dog walking over fields etc. not sire you need them. If you want the best try googling my coveted brand Le Chameau Wellington Boot. Now they are the RR of wellies.

Alison, until recently I would have agreed with you but that is no longer the case I've recently bought a pair of Derwent Muck Boots (model is "Esk")and they are the warmest, most comfortable, luvveryly wellie I have ever owned (and I've been through a LOT of wellies). I have been out in the garden a few times this month and my feet are the one thing that has never been cold. They are neoprene lined, blissfully comfortable, with soles that shed soil easily.
