Oh yes, if it is a Canon, and your sister in law doens't have a 50mm 1.8 (mk2) - or even mk1 (metal as opposed to plastic) - for ~£50-70 I'd definately recommend it.
It's a great prime, as in what you see is what you shoot - not taking into consideration of the crop factor of the sensor -- Nikon also do a 50mm alternative, not sure of the name.
Nikons sensor has a crop factor of 1.5 (meaning that you multiple whatever focal range the lense says it has by 1.5) - so th Nikon's 50mm lense would equate to a 75mm lense on a "full frame" sensor. Canons alternative is 1.6 - so equivilant to an 80mm lense. Great walk arounds though! I only ever take mine off, if I'm going to need to zoom! COnsidering it's not a pro lense, it's outstanding.
