Good ols petrolium jelly works wonders, little & often, especially if you put geroline ointment [the pink stuff] on the cracked thumb wrapped in a plaster all night.

& also rub some hand salve by Burts Bee's into your hands of an eve, full of oils of herbs and with a pic of a suitable hairy bloke on the tin to prove its not 'girly'. Works for my other half who suffers from cracked fingers & tumbs working outside in the winter/summer cold

The body shop do a hemp hand cream. Its in a silver tube and looks manly. I use it through the winter as my hands split across the knuckles.

I also have a brillant gardeners soap from the farmers market here, its got coarse bits of sand init great for scrubbing muck off and smells of nothing. It also lasts forever only on the 2nd bar. Can't think of companys name will ask me mudder when i see her Living... something or other has a leaf on it.
