Right place to post this? Guess I'll soon find out if not!!

Just spent the best part of the day planting out rhubarb, potting on 150 lavander seedlings etc etc....anyway, my hands feel like dried out chipolatas rubbed with a coarse grade sandpaper.

Can anyone suggest a good quality (preferably fragrence free [well I am a bloke after all]) hand cream as the wife is complaining that my hands feel a bit rough

You do make me laff. If she is complaining just keep your hands to yourself.

Me too, my thumbs in particular are suffering: the skin keeps splitting above the nail and is really painful.

Ordinary lipsalve/lipbalm is good for split thumbs, and Body Shop hemp handcream or their body butter range are good for getting soft hands again. Jergens was good too, I don't know if Boots still stock it.

Norwegian formula hand creams or E45 are good.

You cant beat Aqueous cream and its cheap, I even wash my hands with it instead of soap

For the skin splitting by the nails - the only remedy I know is Nu-skin - like a nail varnish which seals the split to allow it to heal.
For the dry hands - a salt or sugar scrub with olive oil. Tip a glug of olive oil into one hand and grab some sugar or coarse salt with the other. Rub your hands together as if you were washing them for a good few minutes- the longer the better. Then rinse off as normal with water. The salt or sugar exfoliates the rough skin and the oil softens it.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I can't find what you mean?
I've found some (extremely expensive) skin care, but not the product you mention. Can you find a link for me? My thumb is killing

Sorry, Two Sheds - old age gets the better of me - it is now called Germolene New Skin. Company clearly taken over a few decades ago!!

My dad used to swear by Drapolene cream (for nappy rash). He used to be a smallholder, and always got cracked thumbs in the winter. I used to work at Wellcome and they made the stuff, so my staff discount came in handy. I don't know if the formulation is still the same though.
I'm using aqueus cream at the moment as son no2 had a large prescription of the stuff, but won't use it.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

The old old way of conditioning the hands, so the skin doesn't split in the winter is... wait for it...

                    Yup, pee on 'em!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try the olive oil and sugar and if it doesn't work, at least it will be finger lickin good. For the same reason I shall not be peeing on my hands

another vote for E45 cream, or sudocrem....a nappy rash cream, but good for really bad dry and itchy skin.

Nutragena hand cream is really nice and stops your hands from getting rough and also prevents chapped hands, good for the lovely Bank holiday weather we are having!!
Also vaseline intensive care hand cream is fab, soaks straight in and is kind to senstive hands and non fragenced.
Also Lakeland do lovely good quality hand creams that are not too expensive.
Two sheds be careful of gardening if you have split skin on your hands, if you can, wear latex gloves until your nail clears up, failing that my grandad used to seal his hands with vaseline, the soil sticks to it but it seals up any cuts in your hands.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

Ah, I found that: but it can't be used on split skin

It's gardening (weeding specifically) that causes it (I've tried wearing gloves, but the latex and the washing up gloves don't last five mins, and thicker gloves are no good because I can't feel what I'm doing). My hands aren't dry at all, but the skin at the sides of both thumb nails splits regularly. It's really sore.

I've just found this Lotil stuff, recommended by a builder

I get splits in exactly the same place -Two Sheds - the New Skin does sting a bit when first applied but it is about the only thing I found that will seal over the split to give it a chance to heal. I managed to cure the last bout of this earlier this year - and now as soon as it looks a bit dodgy I put the stuff on again.

The only other solution is sticking plaster but we all know what a faddle they are on fingers and thumbs.
