  • the best garden furniture?

    Hi gang,

I've finally got the back garden into some kind of shape, and am now looking for some cheap benches, chairs etc.

I don't want to take it indoors in the winter, and I don't want to be painting it every year either so no wood or cast iron. Basically, it has to stay outside all year without complaining.

So far my googling has turned up aluminium as the best material.

Has anyone got some, and what's it like?

I've got an aluminium set in my garden - 2 armchairs and two ordinary chairs and a round table. White painted - needs doing again but all in all it has put up with being out there in all weathers for 20 years with minimal fuss.

Not quite sure what you after TS, but I have a 6 seater version similar to this, the chairs need a scrub each year to get rid of algae because I forget to put them in shed.........

            RE: the best garden furniture?

            Hi,
I would like to seek some advice guys. I am planning to buy some nice garden furniture for my newly built house. I am very confused on what I should be looking to buy as I want something that I can keep for a long period of time like 10 years or more.
Please suggest me the best option.

Ikea have some fab and funky furniture for outdoors in all sorts of materials and not too dear. Metal, resin, plastic and wood. If you go online you would be able to check out the designs etc. They had at least ten different sorts of benches when I checked last.

Hardwood (from properly managed sources) lasts well, if you oil it regularly, and cover it in winter. The new Plastic woven furniture, however, is amazing! It looks like Wicker, but is totally waterproof, and jet-washable if you forget to cover it and it gets algae on it. You just have to store any cushions indoors!

In my experience, the cheap furniture doesn't last...

                    Good luck with your search.

Funny how any mention of furniture brings out the advertisers I wouldn't buy from them on principle!

The best bench I have is old and wood, it was left by the previous owners and has been sat on every year for the last 7, without any maintenance yet. The paint is peeling and I have plans to strip it off and re coat it under the verandah over the winter.

I also have a relative cheap set of coated aluminium made to look like cast iron from Homebase, its ok but wouldn't be my choice for sitting on, you need a cushion to keep your rear warm.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
