  • Metal Shed Question(s)

If this is in the wrong place, please move it.

I did use the S-word Facility, but couldn't find anything. (I'm not really much good with S-word Facilities. Google won't work properly for me... ) Anyhoo...

I'm thinking of buying a metal shed for my lottie. Was talking about this to a friend who said she'd heard that condensation might be a problem.

Is this the case? And, if it is, is there any way to cut down on condensation?

I'm in favour of metal because the Litlle Darlings near the allotments have been known to set fire to wooden ones.

and typed in "are metal sheds any good"

What are you keeping in it? We had a metal shed in our garden when we moved in here. We only kept garden 'stuff' in it but it seemed fine. It was even a good overwintering place for lacewings.

The only reason we've not still got it is we didn't really use it and wanted the garden space. It didn't have 'guttering' so rainwater run-off/splashing was a pain, but other than that...

I have a small 6ft x 5ft metal shed on my lottie, procured in transit to the local tip. I store my tools in it and have two chairs and a breakfast bar in there for the stove, kettle and necessary condiments, as well as a washing up bowl. I also have hanging shelves in there for storage. It's definitely a tight squeeze, but cosy and works for me. I have attached guttering for water harvesting and so the only downside I can see, is when you want to get the tools out. There is no way you can do this quietly in a metal shed, wakes up half the allotment

I have a metal shed,i have no problems with the shed at all except it did suffer from condensation in the winter.

I have since learned that this was my fault by not putting a non permiable (sp) membrane under the flooring which i made from decking

There is a simple solution and that is to stick some polystyrene tiles on the inside of the roof

Thanks TS. See now, if I try that I either don't get any matches or would get reference to "Heavy METAL bands practising in SHEDS" or something equally ludicrous/inappropriate.

In fact thank you everybody! Interesting stuff. I want to use it as an ordinary garden shed for storage, potting, sitting in when it rains, brewing a cuppa etc. Usual kind of thing. Want one with a translucent roof but no windows.

Fortunately (I think!) I've still got to lay the foundations.

I was thinking sand to level the site, then a layer of gravel with paving slabs on top, so the water can drain away underneath. (Lottie's on a very slight slope and I'm putting the shed and a greenhouse at the top.)

Would I still need the permeable wotsit do you think?

If you get too many hits, then you need to put your request in speech marks. Then Google will only search the exact phrase you have specified

                        you're welcome

"The broader your search terms are, the more results you are likely to get. You may end up with thousands of vague results." how to be better at googling

another useful trick is to include a minus sign (-) next to any word you don't want included. So, if you're searching for 'metal shed' and you don't want corrugated metal, you'd type in "metal shed -corrugated"

A couple of ideas for you...
Make some holes high up on the walls of the shed, that will improve the ventillation
If you can make the roof out of clear or translucent plastic that will make it lighter inside
Similarly, paint the inside walls white or a bright colour like yellow
