Has anyone any ideas as to the best way of preserving my skin?
I work outside all year round, and then spend best part of my non working hours in the garden.

I dont have sensitive skin - how ever i need something that will sink into my skin, as i find most sun creams are sticky and i end up covered in dust

Any suggestions herbal, homemade or anything else very welcome

The trick with sun cream is to apply it before you get dressed, so it's dried before you get in the garden

      Hello!
With my "day job" I get asked this question a bit as I work in the natural health business. Your skin's main enemies are environmental (sun, wind, heating, etc) and internal (diet, fluids, caffeine, alcohol, smoking). You can protect your skin in 2 ways, internally and externally. Internally - make sure you drink plenty of water (still and room temperature or warmer). The water should be drunk steadily throughout the day as opposed to in one go (it'll just go through you!). Eat plenty of fresh dark green, red, yellow and orange coloured vegetables and fruit due to their natural anti-oxidant properties. Your skin's natural building blocks require vitamins C, A, E and zinc. Sulphur is also fantastic for the skin. Also ensure you have plenty of essential fatty acids in your diet - that's the good fats. You can get these from oily fish, nuts and seeds (hemp and sunflower are some of the best). You can also get it just from good, extra virgin cold pressed oils (aim for about 2 tablespoons daily). Otherwise you can buy skincare supplements and oils to take internally from your healthfood shop.

Externally - make sure you have a rigourous skincare regime. Deeply cleanse and moisturise your skin morning and night. During the daytime you can use a natural sun cream mixed in with your moisturiser. At night time use richer creams and a face oil. Combine that with some facial exercises and massage (just 5 mins) daily will help feed your skin. The products that you use should be as natural as possible. You want things that are chemical free, preservative free (as far as possible), free from artifical colourings and perfumes. Ideally they'll be based on herbs and essential oils. Products that contain petrochemicals, mineral oils and other chemicals don't actually sink into the skin and can damage and weaken the skin in the long run.

You haven't mentioned how old you are (and I won't ask!) but great essential oils for healing and protecting the skin are frankincense, myrrh, rose, neroli and jasmine.

I can PM you specific products/brands if you would like - just let me know.

      Thanks

A good cheap exfoliator is oatmeal. Simply put some in your hand and wet it, then gently roll it over your skin, face and body if under the shower. Does a great job, is cheap and pretty creamy too.

              Stay in!!!?

I find a big pot of cheap moisturiser, without all the perfume and cr*p added, is best. personally, I like S*perdr*g's own big pots of the white (cocoa butter) or yellow (evening primrose) one. Not at all slimy, and lasts for ages. But probably because I never remember to use it. So, I'm probably going to have a face like old shoe leather when I'm older!

There was a newspaper report by the checkout in Aldi`s yesterday saying that their anti ageing serum had come out best in test results amd is about 1/4 the price of Boots.
Thought I`d check it out next time I `m in there.

I found when I used some of the posher ones with all the claims and God knows what in them to make me ageless that my skin was really dry. Since I simplified my regime and avoided parabens and other nasties that my skin takes care of itself and I need for less product.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Well at least it won't be like an old boot G4!

Seriously I find the creams based on oatmeal (Aveeno for example) sink in really easily and work well. You will need a SPF as well though - as high as you can go.

Neutrogena works wonders for dry skin, sinks in and leaves no oily residue. I use the unscented hand cream for my face and I look not a day over 75 :-)

I have tried this and the eye gel that you can get from there.

They seem to do the job for me, especially the eye gel which I swear by and it is only £1.49 and will last a couple of months at least.

Put it this way, I have no creases at all around my eyes although I used to have when I was younger.

I will be 50 next year and my skin is a lot healthier looking than a lot of people who are a couple of decades younger in the school yard!

netragena soap, and cyclax moisterizer @ £1 per big tub, plenty of water, and no alcohol or smoking has worked for me for 45 years- now close to 60 and skin still pretty good. plus wear a cap or hat to protect from sun, and i swathe a scarf around my head and cheeks in cold, windy weather.

Thanks all, i shall try to take your advice, but the drinking of wine probably wont stop or cider as my brother is having a go at home brew so i must try it.

im only 26 but still worry about the leather effect but so long as the insides work its all good

I love the sun and love alcohol so expect to look wrinkled. My mum is a sun and alcohol loving 89 year old. Still lives alone and hasn't lost any of her brain cells yet so other than a few wrinkles at least she loves life.
