I use pencil and then gather all the labels up at the end of the winter and they are beautifully clean and ready to use again!

I always end up with the plastic ones in the compost bin or somewhere where they shouldnt be, always with the wrong name on it. I now use china graph pencils as these clean of f but stay put whilst you want it to.

For the main beds on the lotties I have started to make a batch of wooden ones about 18" long out of some treated exterior stair spindles, c/w pointy ends and a little hole at the end so they can be hung up.

China markers are also known as chinagraph pencils, if that helps.

There's also this idea for diy aluminium labels - you can (permanently) emboss the labels using a biro, so they never fade.
