  • Storing home made bread

    What do you lot store your home made bread in? Currently we wrap ours in foil - bit of a waste really, as I hate to waste stuff like foil.

    I've seen the breathable bags in Lakeland, but again, it's plastic - not the best material on the 'eco' front..

    I know HM bread doesn't last as long, but after a day or two (if it lasts that long) it goes a bit stale... what do you use to store yours in?

    Homemade bread will go stale after a day or two whatever you store it in. That said, we store ours in paper bags in a wooden bread bin. Works fine, never heard of using tin foil so can't compare with that.

    Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

      We have an enamel bread bin and it goes in there. Don't bother wrapping it , doesn't seem to make a difference.

        We don't have a bread bin... maybe it's time to get one Use foil, as tried it in clingfilm, and in doing so made the bread taste like plastic.

          I bake 5 1lb loaves at a time and put 4 of them into the freezer, then take one out a day and keep that in the microwave on the bread board so long as the cut edge is down on the bread board it keeps fresh enough.

              I store mine in a wooden bread bin. If it's going to be more than 2 days before I eat it (if I do a big batch for example) then I wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer as soon as it's cooled. After a day or 2 in the bread bin, or once you've defrosted a loaf from the freezer, you can refresh it by sticking it in the oven at 160oC for 20 minutes and it reverses the staling process. It does dry it out a bit round the crust, but the bread inside is much better than un-refreshed bread.

                You can also sprinkle the bread with a bit of water - not much because it makes it go soggy - before refreshing in the oven. I use this trick on French sticks which go stale in hours, not days.

                  I've got a bag from Lakeland which is cotton, with a plastic inner.... HM bread goes in that, however, it rarely lasts until Day 3 or 4, cos we eat it!!

                  I tend to make slightly smaller loaves more often to stop it going stale (although if it is stale, it makes a fab bread and butter pudding!)

                    I wrap mine in a plastic bag then in the breadbin. Have found the homemade 'french' loaves last way longer, we are still eating ours non-toasted up to day 5 after making them. Only make french ones now. No idea why they last longer, maybe it's because they don't have sugar in the recipe? Or because the crust is crunchier it protects the bread a bit more? The other sorts will only last fresh for 2 days then have to be toasted. Nothing is wasted though as the birds get anything left

                      Thanks for the feedback peeps - we've only just started to bake the bread in the oven rather than the breadmaker (never had a dome shape on the loaf) - this time though, the dough done in the BM - then banged in the oven - made a lovely loaf Tasted better too.... got the idea from the other post about bread on here, so defo sticking with it now!

                        we use one of the large resealable bags that the freezer size pack of rolls come in from asda or tesco.
