I couldn't resist the Lakeland sale (still going on!) and ordered a bunch of things for the garden. One of the tools I bought was something called the Garden Bandit, here: Garden Bandit - Lakeland, the home of creative kitchenware).
It arrived yesterday and I got to try it out. I immediately sent my partner a text message saying that it was amazing. Basically, it's a loop of metal on a handle, and you draw it over the soil to hoe it. It cuts through the roots, but it also doesn't drag the soil everywhere when you do it, so you don't make big piles all over the place.
It has a little trouble with couchgrass roots and probably wouldn't be able to go through dock or dandelion roots, but it does a fabulous job of decapitating most things. It's not sharpened; I imagine if you wanted to take a file to it you could make it into an even better tool.
The only complaint I have about it is that the handle has little grooves on it which can be uncomfortable if you're using it for a while, but I figure some Sugru (https://sugru.com/) will help make it perfectly comfortable.
It's usually £3.99, but is on sale for £1.99. I'd say that even for £3.99, it is well worth the money.
