Got a new 'Kettle' for the plot on order!

After having our shed burgled a few months ago (and having already bought a new 'gas stove', but being unable to find anyone selling the gas cartridges at a reasonable price) we had our attention caught today by a new outdoor kettle, and after doing a bit of research, ordered one today from the Self Sufficient Shop.



Its a 'twig kettle', which uses a very small fire (literally a few twigs) to boil up to 1.5litres of water in a fairly short time, along with a couple of attachments that allow you to heat a saucepan (or frying pan or wok) at the same time, ideal for doing a cup of tea and warming some home made soup on those cold days in the winter in the plot!

We will let you know how it works when we get it, but thought it such a great product I just had to share!

I've got one. Brilliant! Trouble is, you always REALLY need a brew in the sort of weather when all the twigs are damp. Started collecting stuff in a carrier bags in good weather and taking it with us - dry cones and stuff. But the smug feeling when the tea is made can't be whacked!

Cool, glad to know we arent the only ones who thought they were a great idea!

We have a lean to extension on the shed, so will be storing away enough twigs and cones etc where its dry, along with some tinder. Lee has a flint and steel, so think he is oging to enjoy using that to light the kettle with, even more environmentally friendly than buying matches!

If you dont mind me asking Flum, how long does it take to boil?

Hi Snadger, yup, there seems to be 4 different branded versions of the same thing, the Kelly Kettle, the Twig Kettle, the Ghillie Kettle and the Eydon Storm kettle, the one we've ordered (from the Self Sufficieny Shop was the marginally cheaper one, when you include the postage, and one of them didnt have a 'whistle' with it, so make sure you look fully at the spec's before ordering!

We thought it would also be great for when we go camping, saves taking gas n stuff, we could just take the Twig Kettle and BBQ to cook on!

Great choice - I've had one of these for a few years for the lottie. It is really effective, and boils the water quite quickly once you get a good fire going in the bottom. And the woodsmoke smell seems to add to the enjoyment. I have a carrier bag of twigs in the car just for this. And all it seems to need is a good stout handful.
Remember to pull the cork and chain to guide the pour - took me ages to figure that out (durr).

About 4 or 5 minutes - it's surprisingly fast.

Wouldn't a flask be easier? Or is it more about the fun of making fire

Hi Shadylane,

A flask is ok for a bit, but we've found if we are spending the full day at the plot, then we tend to run out of hot water (we've been known to be on the plot from 8am till 10pm in summer), so having a way to heat water for a brew every couple of hours is something that we find useful.

Of course, having something that we can not only use to make a brew, but also play with fire whilst doing so has nothing at all to do with it, honest

I can see us being at the plot for full days in the summer, the only problem I have is to loo!

I only ever drink hot water and take a flask with me to the lottie, but I love the idea of a kettle that will boil from just a few twigs. Also I think I'd actually take a proper break, by the relaxing process of waiting for the kettle to boil. Whereas sometimes with a flask it drink and go, so you forget to take time out and smell the roses. I hadn't realised there were such things on the market, thanks for highlighting it.

Plus it means you can stick around for longer than you would do normally when your flask has run out.

Thats not to bad a price for 1 of them, I went for the cheaper option of a Volcano Stove a bit ago and I just end up with soot all over me

My feeling is that we don't drink coffee and flask tea is the devil's brew! It has to be made freshly!
