It's always like that - there's more than one way to skin a tomato

Hoeing is quick but you have to do it frequently, as weeds keep popping up
Hand-weeding takes longer (I use a patio weeder, which is just a mini-hoe I suppose) but you don't do it so often, esp. if you leave the weeds to grow quite big before you pull them (the big ones shade out smaller weeds, so you have fewer weeds overall. Don't let them compete with your veg though)

Right you are Two Sheds....having discussions with others (not on Grapevine) about ways of ripening tomatoes - 10 people, 10 different answers.

I dont like the idea of chopping all these weeds in half and spreading more weeds - but I also want the easiest solution (dont we all). Think I am going to think about this one a while. Its for my allotment you see and I havent needed a hoe in my tiny back garden and maybe I wont need one at all. But if I do decide I now have lots of ideas

I bought my dutch hoe from Tesco's for £1 on a clearance shelf around April last year I'm sure they still made profit from me but i'm happy with how it performed. Clears between the rows of veg real quick.

            The Pro's for me then:

            1) If short of time to attend veg patch, a 15 minute hoe once a week is enough to keep things ticking over.

            2) My back and knees aren't taking a battering.

            3) Great for reaching under a canopy of leaves for example Brussels Sprouts to rake out fallen dead leaves etc.

            4) Using it to create a small drill along a bed.

I'm not expecting mine to last that long although that won't stop me from looking after it. When it does go I will almost certainly look to invest in a more expensive one.
