  • Winter Lottie Footwear

    Hello all,

I'm looking to get some footwear that I can use on the allotment over the colder, damper months.

Last year I tried wellies and trainers and both left my feet freezing cold!

I've tried on some lovely looking hiking boots (breathable, waterproof and warm) but they were too high (in the ankle area!) and VERY stiff and inflexible and I don't think I'll be wearing them often enough to break them in.

Can anyone recommend anything that might be suitable?

Maybe just wellies and big thermal socks?!

Try rigger safety boots, in leather of course. Breathable, waterproof, good ankle support. There are fleecy lined ones available, but mine are unlined - coolish in summer and with an extra pair of socks (oh yes, I have more than one pair of socks!!) warm in winter. Not especially cheap, but will last a decade at least.

I use leather walking/hiking boots. Bought from Millets years and years ago. They come in different ankle heights so go try a few different ones on.

I prefer just wellies because if i wear my favourites [docs] i end up with mud everywhere, and thick socks of course.
trouble is, you'd need a size bigger for the size of the socks

Can't wear wellies - they make my feet sweat

I wear leather Hiking Boots all spring, summer and autumn - these cost £180 new, so I buy them second-hand on eBa*y. When it gets wet I wear my stoopidly expensive Neoprene wellies, as they are easier to clean than the Hikers. When it gets cold I dig out my old fleece-lined Riggers. Unfortunately for me, I have size five feet, my Riggers are supposedly a six, but my Husband, who has size eight feet can get them on! So it's several pairs of cotton socks on first, and a change to the usual waddle, as I get used to having hooge feet - bit like wearing Moon Boots - remember them?

Rigger boots with thermal socks - the steel toe protection is fab and very useful for me and they last forever. The ones I use at the lottie were standard site issue to me over 15 years ago and are still going strong. Wellies are hopeless, uncomfortable for long periods of time and either sweaty or freezing.

My feet were freezing today wearing wellies (which I cut down to welly shoes) so I need something warm too. I love the idea of riggers but can't afford them so I was thinking of going for these in a size bigger so I can get more socks on....

I use hiking boots too, with hiking socks. I use the high ankle ones, but you can buy them without ankle protection, like these.

Seriously - try eB*y. Loads of people buy £180 Hikers for a walking holiday, wear them for a week, then get rid of them. My last pair were as new and cost me £35 including postage!

Rigger boots don't cost much more than that even when bought new if you go to a decent PPE supplier and I'm sure they would be cheap on ebay if you looked around. Having said that I get them for free with work so even better
