Has anyone got a windscreen defroster that plugs into the cigarette lighter of a car? Himself thinks it would be useful to get one. I wondered if a hot water bottle on the dashboard would be as efficient?!

I remember the first car my dad had when I was a nipper. An old Austin 12 I think. In Winter, he used a heater that stuck to the windscreen with sucker feet. Don't think the car had a lighter socket though. Must have been directly wired and I have the vaguest of memories of two small holes in the dashboard that were the power source. He also used glycerine wiped on the inside of the screen to stop it freezing. How things have moved on

I've seen space type blankets that cover the whole of the windscreen; you trap them with each of the front doors of the car. Are they any good?

The amount of people up my road last year that were doing this was shocking. You could tell it was boiling too, by the steam coming from the kettle. I did chuckle, smug in the knowledge. Karma bit me right on the bottom though, as some dudes car slide down his drive way into my new car, that I had just taken home a few days before the snow came :/

Doesn't hot water risk cracking the glass? I used to use an empty tape cassette to scrape with.

Hot water freezes more quickly than warm. Don't need it on the new car as the defrost blaster of a heater has it cleared in no time but we had one of those space covers, silver and it was good. Ours went over the whole top of car though.
Autoglym make a spray defroster that is fantastic.

Would a hot water bottle on the dashboard work? Those heater things that go across my rear screen (if you can't tell i'm not great with cars lol) don't work. A hot water bottle would be ideal until i can get them fixed, if i can get them fixed.

I put a squash bottle on mine, filled with hot water. Well, I did until Mr Z filled it with boiling water and it all curled up and I had to explain that's what boiling water did - and you had to add some cold water first. And then you had to actually give it 10 mins and it didn't work automtically....yada yada yada.

I've done the hot water bottle method and it does work if you leave it for about 15 mins.

Thanks Fi, I remember that but couldn't find it. We do cover the windscreen with a blanket trapped inside the doors, spray de-icer and scrape the outside, it's inside that's more of a problem. We tend to have to start the car and leave it running for about 15 minutes before we can get off the drive.

We have a mini with heated front screen which is great, the ice just slides off - but for the other one, I plug a fan heater in - 5 mins, the car is warm and the windows defrosted

thats what we do,never fails,unless a power cut lol,
