I'm thinking of getting one for my daughter for Christmas and wondered whether anyone can recommend a particular model? (I'm thinking of the sort with a bowl that you freeze overnight first - not the expensive types with a built in freezer!).

Does anyone have an ice-cream maker?

I can't help either, sorry. I've bought a cheap one for my son for Christmas with the bowl -
Kenwood IM200 1.1 Litre Ice Cream Maker: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home
It won't make ice-cream in big batches but I'm sure he will have some fun trying!

I have a Phillips one where you freeze the bowl - I also have an ancient one which uses ice and salt to do the freezing. They are great but I usually find I don't have freezer space for the bowl The other one is easier to use as my freezer has a built in ice-maker so I don't really have to pre-plan it all.Happy Gardening,

I fancy one of these, we make ours manually and it's always lovely so i'm not sure what to do.
I'll maybe add it to my wish list along with the mincer/sausage maker, meat slicer, cheese press.........

I've got a Lakeland one which works well. I tend to freeze the ice cream once it's made as it is quite soft but then it depends how you like it. We had every type of soft fruit as an ice -cream or sorbet over the summer including gooseberry sorbet. Haven't used it much recently but then we don't eat much ice cream this time of year. I keep the bowl on the freezer then I don't have to remember to freeze it before hand. Strawberry ice cream was the best.

We were given one as a wedding present and I think we only used it once. Charity shopped it years ago as it took up far too much space and we had no desire to use it. Do check that she'd like one before spending your hard earned cash as they're not for everybody. I know it sounds obvious but hopefully you know what I mean.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We have a Magimix Le glacier 1.1l as well.
Bowl lives in freezer all the time and BH gets it out to make ice cream. She makes ice cream at least once a week.
Yoghurt ice cream made either with tin strawberrys or frozen fruit add a bit of sugar and leave to churn until thick. mmmmmm!
You can add alcohol but it takes longer to thicken but its lovely.

Just seen this thread, so probably a bit too late for Xmas (unless you've got a Robert Dyas near you), but useful if you are thinking of getting one, and you might get it in a sale.
I've got this one - GCR017 Nuo Ice Cream Maker - Robert Dyas - Nuo, ice cream, cream, maker, icecream - and I can highly recommend it. I got it originally because it had the shallowest freezer bowl out of all the ones I looked at (the Phillips bowls were too big for my shallow freezer drawers). It was a bonus that it was the cheapest one I found too. Now I've got it, I love it. The only thing is, although it recommends putting the freezer bowl in the freezer for 8 hours before use, I've found a whole 24 hours is a LOT better. Other than that it's brilliant.
(I've got a great Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream recipe on my blog that I made in this ice cream maker.)
