  • Onion Sets from J Parkers!

I've used J Parkers on and off for years, they're good for bulbs, and for young plants. Quite cheap, but the plants are generally about a year younger than elsewhere, so you know you'll have to grow them on a bit.

Anyway, I went on their website to order a load of raspberry canes - 30 canes for £20.00, which will take a year or so to produce fruit. Ended up also buying 25 x Florence strawberry plants for £9.99 and then spotted that they've started selling onion sets...
Bearing in mind that I've spent small fortunes on sets in the last few years from big names like T&M and Marshall's, and every time they've arrived with a fair proportion of them going mouldy, I thought these couldn't be any worse... So, ordered 3 packs of 150 for £7.50. They arrived today, packed into paper bags, and they are the best quality onion sets I've had in 5 years! Good sized, firm, and not even the slightest sign of mould Of course the final proof will be in the growing, but with 450 sets, if even half of them grow into decent onions then I'm winning

If I remember correctly, Parkers also have a wholesale operation and sell onion sets in 25 kg bags.

yes it's a lot but something Clubs and Allotments Associations may bear in mind because they are ridiculously cheap compared to the shops.

Yep they do AP, and the aforementioned raspberry canes and other fruit bushes are a lot cheaper ordered that way too

I agree with you on the plants Sars, I use them all the time, I bought 46 roses from them last summer, they arrived in October and are really good quality/value, every bush is now starting to leaf.
Will be trotting over there now to peruse the onions...

Interesting that you find they're sending out quality products as my experience has been somewhat different and I've put it down to you get what you pay for. Might give them a try again if they've improved on quality control.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

              They don't deliver to Ireland
I have been using Marshalls or Dobies for my Onions, Shallots & Garlic last/this year, no issues so far...

Pending order from Marshalls of a "special" of 300 sets due to arrive soon.....that on top of my F1 Hi-ball grown from seed, my already thriving over-wintered garlic, onion and shallots....where am I going to put them ....ah well, there goes another bit of the lawn
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
