  • casserole dish

I need a casserole dish (cast iron for my induction hob that will also go in the oven an look nice to put on the table). I can't afford le creuset.

Sainsburys have some cream ones on offer, which I have my eye on, but having never had one I don't know which size to get?

They do a 3 litre one and a 5 litre one.

I will be using it for friends coming to dinner and making beef bourgignon type dishes, 6 adults to be fed.

    Thanks for advice!

I'd definitely go for the 5 litre one. I often cook for six and find it's the bigger the better in terms of pots and pans. Plus you can always half fill a big pot, you can't overfill a small one.

If you're after a bargain, it might be worth having a look at an Asian cookware shop, if you have one anywhere around. We have some great ones near us with really sturdy, big pots at great prices.

I have 3 sizes of Le Creuset casserole and they're all used regularly. I'd go for the largest for a casserole for friends. You need the room to stir things around while cooking. They get very heavy when full and hot to handle. If you're putting them in a floor level oven don't forget that you have to pick it up from there!

You can't go wrong with a cast iron Dutch oven I've had mine for over 30 years its not pretty to look at but it has been well used for either stews, bakes and bread.

Like Seahorse says go for the 5ltr one, mines stamped 5qt which is around the same size.

Hey Seahorse. . . you cannot see "The City Lights" from the top of Solsbury hill. If you see him, tell him. Cheers, Tony.

Thanks all, I will go for the 5 litre one.

Seahorse, I nearly fell off my chair when you asked if we have any asian shops - NO it's like living on the flaming moon round here! Only just opened a sainsburys 10 miles away last week before then the nearest was 25 miles!

If you have a Lidl or an Aldi, they often have cast iron casseroles at a good price.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I have Le Creuset. Brilliant and I love them. Check out Debenhams, House of Fraser as they sell off the seasonal colour for up to 50% off if you catch it right. TK Maxx often have some LC too.
