Getting multiple quotes for all kind of work is a good idea, however even this has its pitfalls.
I saw a quote last week which read 'to installing new combination boiler £1475-00p' No make no model nothing. There are some unfortunates out there that would accept this because it is the lowest quote and not actually question what they are getting for their money.
CORGI/GAS SAFE REGISTER are necessary organisations but I feel to some extent they have mislead the public. The actual registration means that you have passed certain assessments, not that you are good at your job or even honest. The public should always be wary, do a little research and ask pertinent questions.
Only last week I was called in by one of my clients (a large letting agency) to assess a problem with some Landlords Gas Safety Records. On face value they looked OK it was only I looked closely I noticed there were glaring mistakes like a gas fire with an output of 29KW. When I asked what had raised their suspicions I was told the story.
A lady tenant had come into the office and complained that when her back boiler unit and gas fire were checked the man had not carried out the spillage or flue flow tests, her words not mine. These tests are vital to ensure the appliances are safe.
Most folks know about smoke tests but to use this wording she knew what she was talking about so the agency asked me to call and investigate. It transpires that her father is a registered engineer and he had told her what to expect. The man could have killed her and her baby but for the sake of money made the worst possible short cuts. He charges £85-00 for the work and when I enquired he had been in the property less than 20 minutes. Lawyers eat your heart out.
Being a responsible agency they have asked me to call and retest all the work carried out by the man and he has been reported to the HSE for prosecution and an even more bitter blow for the idiot, he as not yet been payed and won't be. Sometimes GOD is GOOD.
