A rucksack with a belt as well as shoulder straps makes a massive difference to how heavy it feels too, so if you have the option go for one of those. I agree with the torch and would suggest maybe a head torch as it leaves her hands free to open tent flaps etc.

She's back safe, well, but exhausted and starving hungry! She managed to get lost for a couple of hours, but no harm done. She's also going to be gutted that her mummy's decided the Golden Girls will come to me next week.

Flo I think getting lost is part of the adventure I know when we're out walking or camping we usually see DOE's wondering around with maps and they all seem to look lost to me.

I've not spoken to her yet, but Himself sent a text to ask her if she enjoyed herself. The answer was "No, awful". Whether the weather's had a hand in it, or she really didn't like it, I'm not sure. All I can think is all the money it's cost to equip her at the Bronze stage and maybe she's not planning on going any further

She'll probably reflect on it with her mates in afew days time and decide it wasn't so bad after all .
Both my kids did their DofE's - and so too did my OH and I ( that's where we first met!)

Equipment can always be sold on but hold on to it for a while FF- you just never know!

Auntie Flo, The young lady was only telling the truth. I have never heard anyone come back from a wet camping trip/army exercise and say how wonderful it was. Then the bad memories fade and the good ones take pride of place.

Give her chance to talk about it with her friends and they usually start laughing about the bad times. Like being stood in the turret of a Ferret armoured car in a forest in Germany for two days in the pouring rain. The laugh, I only had to stand there, the bottom of the motor started to fill with water and the poor bladdy driver had to sit in it.

I got my daughter a Burgen from Ebay, but most of her DofE stuff we get from Mountain Warehouse. They give a discount for DofE.
