Anyone used these?
SELF WATERING CLOCHES (9 cloches and 6 ends)

I'm looking for things that can be held down on what can be a windy site.
Although I like Gardening Naturallys interchangeable hoops and covers, I think I'd quickly get holes in any poly covers I tried to use.
I like the self watering idea for when things get going. I want to be able to warm my (North facing) often wet soil up in Spring so I can start carrots/Hamburg parsley/peas etc off early outside with more reliable results than I've had previously.

They look like they're made from correx. Which isn't that dear and you could cut and shape some yourself for a lot less than that. Wire coat hangers cut up for pegs.
For top hinge you could use loops of soft wire.

Heavily over engineered IMHO and the one thing that it needs to be - airtight for a frost and wind-proof so it doesn't take off, it doesn't look like it accomplishes.

The gutters will deliver rain, what?, and inch inside the cloche? Can't see that is any different to it running down the cloche and landing at the bottom of it, soaking in, and the roots then finding it (or watering the plants in the middle of the cloche which are not near the sides anyway.

Personally I would have thought some hoops, continuous sheet of polythene, and some string tided over the outside (from one leg of the hoop to the other, or diagonally from the leg of one hoop to the leg on the opposite site of an adjacent hoop) would be fine and a quarter of the price; can also then just pull-up one side for ventilation in Spring when the day temperature is too hot.

I had something similar. They didn't last more than a couple of seasons. I've now got these and are excellent. One got blown from one end of the allotment site to the other in last year's high winds ( my fault for not pegging properly ) and all it got was a small crack.

I just use corrigated roofing with glass at each end, does the job and cheap.

BM's IKEA box is a brilliant idea.

I have two one metre long cloches that I got 6 years ago (when they were only a fiver each) Nice rigid plastic that have been outside Jan to July every year and still good and strong. They are on sale here at the moment.
