I have a set of root trainers and was also disappointed with the quality. I won't be buying them again.

I've done beans in 3" pots and root trainers side by side and to be honest there isn't a massive difference on the plants.

I've got lots of pots, and pot carrier trays - I "Bought" a job lot closing down nursery clearance years ago ... the owner basically wanted the site cleared, so anything in his pocket was bunce ... the deal suited us both!

I prefer that all my pots are the same "type" - makes potting on and pot-carrier trays all much easier for me and I think saves time as I grow loads of stuff, so no margarine tub or vending cup stand-ins to be seen here ...



Image looks more flimsy then it is, they are pretty strong and certainly nothing like the one-time-trip type that I see in garden centres which are more like this:

that was the end result of sowing a single capsule of Lilium regale seeds in Spring 2013, leaving them in the pair of seed trays all summer, poor things!, potting them up to the 9cm pots you see in Spring 2014 and leaving them in the pots all summer, poor things! and planting them out last weekend only to discover I had put four-per-pot ... there are 7 trays of 20 pots each on the trolley, turned out to be "quite a lot of Lilies to plant"

these are some root trainer trays I have been using for trees ,they are about 12 years old proper comercial trays, they are so strong I can sit on a stack of them, I dont use them now have found a different way of growing trees, sorry these are air pruning cells not quite the same thing but good at getting a plant ready to plant out

I really like the look of those. Any ideas where they might be available or what I need to goggle to find them? Like Alison I think it's the number of plants per unit of space that I like and the fact that I think plants stay in them longer with less ill effects than in pots if needs be.

I've been looking for some of those too. They look like the type of thing that is used for raising "Cell Grown Trees" (and probably hedging plants too).

Any that don't germinate take out and put a germinated one in its place, and wind up with fully populated trays - and a separate pile of "spares".

I've bought cell-grown plants which look to have been tipped out of those containers. They are deep but not much diameter, great for seedlings that send down a fairly serious root.

Like these cell-grown Berberis I planted, for example. Can't remember the price, but they were probably something like 30p each ...

They came from Sweden I think, I had to import them in a commercial quantity, think I have about 60 of them, not aloud to sell on here though ,they do last though never broken one of them

we used to pull out the growing ones to fill up a tray used to grow xmas trees in them
