  • Seed Dispenser

Has anybody heard of or seen a product for sowing seeds ie radish lettuce type etc. This is a syringe type of product. I have seen it advertised but for the life of me cannot remember where.

Hi Floreal and welcome to the Vine!

I think I know what you mean, and I THINK they are sold in Wilko. THe one I'm thinking of is a round dish with a funnel at one end, then the top is perspex and fits on top of the dish like a lid BUT with various sized holes in the side so you can line up the correct size hole for your size of seed.

Fill the dish with the seed and put the lid on, rotate till correct size hole is lined up with the funnel and gently dribble seeds into the drill. I used to have one, but think it went the way of all flesh some years ago.

I just pour the seed into my palm and sow pinch at a time. THat is probably why I sow far too thickly.........perhaps I should get one too!

...or you can use a vinegar bottle or 1-holed salt cellar - mix the seed with sand and pour along the seed drill.

Doesn't work for massive seeds tho as they get stuck in the 'ole!

I like the salt cellar idea, will have to try that next year since I definitely oversowed this year!

I got one of these thinking I'd load it with carrot seeds and depress once where I wanted a seed, duh - totally agree with what Jacob says and it's about as much good as a chocolate frying pan, using absolutely anything else to move your seed is easier.

now has anyone actually used the magic seeder as seen below, I think dobies have it as well.

and will it place a carrot seed where you would like one? and do I really want to get one??

                  thanks if you can help

I use my fingers....and grow in little bunches. Sometimes big bunches when the wind blows but what the heck!!!

In that case I'll just carry on tapping the seed out of the packet and spreading any dense lumps out with a dibber (twig or stalk). Something that could put a seed at a click would be so useful as I'm planning to grow a couple of thousand carrots this year and I attempt to space them around a 1\4 inch apart.

If I used my fingers I would be growing big clumps of carrots all over the place as a pinch of seed would be half of a standard packet!

                        thanks again

Just a thought - I remember in the depths of my memory someone using a felt tip pen tip - picks it up and once it touches the soil, the electric charge releases it where you want it.

                          Works on very small seeds.

I use a pencil as a dibber. I then wipe the tip before dabbing on the tongue and then picking up the seed. The downside is you can end up with a mouthfull of seed compost
