I'm thinking of buying a mulching lawnmower, but can't decide between one that will only mulch and those that will either mulch (with some adjustment) or eject the grass into the grassbox in the traditional way. I have no experience of the mulching process, so I would appreciate any advice.

I do hope you're not thinking of buying expensive. I've never heard of anything advertised as a mulching lawnmower, but I presume it is one which doesn't have a grassbox and therefore leaves the cuttings on the lawn. A lot depends on the size of the lawn, how pristine you want it to look, and the time you have available (also how fast the grassgrows). When I had a small lawn I used a mower without a grassbox and when the clippings got too much used a lawnrake and collected the surplus. Now I've got a large "lawn" very uneven and never intended to be a bowling green, I use a hover thingy with a grassbox for the bits the guinea pigs haven't eaten. The mowings go on the compost heap. I always set the blades fairly high anyway as I don't like scalped lawns (only necessary if you want to play golf or bowls).
