  • EasiYo Revisited

Have been considering getting an EasiYo maker thing, and found an old thread on it...

Do people still like them? Are they lounging unused in your cupboards, or wearing out from all your yohurt making?

    HI OWG
Overworked in my household, I've got one big thingy for setting the yoghurt and three tubs on the go at any one time so I can have a mix of flavours and eat it every day with my lovely allotment fruit.
I used to do the milk and yoghurt culture thing but I'm not fond of runny yoghurt so every other day I'd have 4 pots with strainers and the whey dripping through so I'd get thick greek style yoghurt. With the Easyo I don't have to do that.
The only down side is the food miles factor, it all comes from New Zealand.

How does it work? Just looked at the web site and it isn't very clear, too full of telling me it's wonderful and not full enough of basic factual stuff.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

You get a big container which you half fill with hot water, the yoghurt power mix then goes into a small container with cold water, shake well, screw on the lid and put in the big container with the hot water in it, add the lid and leave for 8 hours+. It makes about a kilo a time.
I've only ever had it go wrong once and I must use it about three times a week. I got fed up with the other method, of having to have a starter and then having pots of yoghurt straining for hours on end. Not good in the summer and with cats helping themselves.
Also with Easyo you can get different flavoured powders, organic ones, greek type yoghurt, bio yoghurt and a vanilla one, which I love.
Good old Lakeland stocks most of the yoghurt mixes, you can also get them online but Lakeland prices seemed to be better value. I did work out the price of making your own against bought yoghurt, it wasn't much cheaper but certainly no more expensive.
You can buy the bits seperately so you can have one large container, and if you have a number of the inner containers with the yoghurt mix, then you can have different flavours on the go. You can also get some one-serving screwtop pots so that you can add to picnics, packed lunches etc.

Thanks Sue, I've seen them in Lakeland but never really taken much notice. I tend to eat yogurt most days for my lunch so may investigate further. How long does it keep for after you've made it? My mum used to have an electric maker when I lived at home, really nice yogurt but a bit of a faff. One of my brother's used to have a bit of a cow's milk alergy (seems to have grown out of it thank God) so we used to used goats milk from the farm up the road. Didn't taste the same as bought ones but I liked it with a bit of cooked fresh fruit or sometimes some homemade jam.

It keeps very well, at least a week, although I have eaten it after about 10 days and am still here.
                  best wishes

Just read this thread and have a few questions that started going round in my head. I’ve never made yoghurt before but would the following work?

Take cold long life (UHT) milk and pore in inner EasiYo container. UHT manufacturers have done all the heating for me, killing any harmful bacteria that may stop the yoghurt forming.
Add natural live yoghurt to milk and place small container inside large one with the hot water.
If this method would work, then that would make the whole process cheaper and easier?
A litre of UHT milk is about 38p in the supermarket and once you have made your first batch of yoghurt then you have your starter, for each time you make more.
Has this method been used by anyone? Would it work?

Should do. I used to make it with whole milk heated then cooled to just warm and a starter of a tabelspoon of live yog from the shops. Put in a wide topped vacuum flask. Fanny's your aunt!

I suppose it would work but I find the resulting yoghurt is too thin for my taste and to thicken it up to Greek yoghurt standards, I have to drain it, which takes hours. And then I forget to keep some starter back and have to go and buy another pot of yoghurt etc.
So the convenience of Easyo makes a big difference for me

I used to make mine in a similar manner years ago, but like Sue, always managed to forget to keep some back and it was always a bit runny. The Easyo is so quick and easy and it doesn't have any horrible ingredients in it either. I think it would probably have to be my best gadget in teh kitchen really!

Well they better be good as have just ordered one over t'internet. Should turn up in a few days so will give my verdict some time next week. Will be mixing plain yogurt with fresh soft fruits out the garden so at least it'll have a nice flavouring.

PS - if I don't like it I'll be seeking compensation from the likes of Sue, Jennie etc after such positive recommendations, just as long as you're not on commission..............
