This is what I brought last year to put down after I had cutdown the weed.

Comes in various widths and lengths.
There is different material that I will not use at all. Used it once and the weeds grew right through.
It looks like black garden fleece, similar to this.

Yup - woven stuff does - the downside is that if you cut it it will fray - so I'd advise melting it either after cutting it up or using heat to make the 'cut' - that will bind the 'threads' together...

You could probably do it with a lighter - the stuff melts / burns easy (its thin plastic) - maybe heat up some metal implement?
I bought a cheap burner from China for about £3.00 that you fill with lighter fluid - holds a constant flame that you can control more/ direct than a lighter - I'll try to remember to take a pic of it - can't remember what its called so can't google it - I suppose its a bit like a portable bunsen burner...

Search for 'chef's blow torch' or 'wind proof lighter'. Works a treat, though it takes a while to cut.

When I use this sort of stuff, I go round the edge with a digging spade and "tuck" the edge into the soil.

Not had any problem with the ends when you do that .

Give it a try and see how you get on.

Means I also don't need pegs, but that's just me.

For what you want, what they said.

Just an aside, though, that because I personally don't like the plastic-y woven stuff, I tend to use the other fleece-y one. You can buy different grades, and the tougher one (which is incidentally brown, so fits right in) suits my needs perfectly for both paths and beds.
