  • New allotment, finally!

    Hello everyone,

After being on the waiting list for over 6 years I've finally been given a plot. Its not ideal, it's very overgrown, full of rubbish and shaded by some huge trees along the east side of the plot. I'm hoping it will still get some sun later in the day but have so far only been down in the morning.

Its not full size, it's about 12m x 9m, however I work full time so didn't want anything too big.

Fixing the problems of being overgrown and a mess dosent concern me. I'm happy to get stuck in (actually quite like digging and weeding, I find it quite therapeutic!) It's the trees which bother me. So if anyone has any ideas for the shadier side please let me know!

Other than that I will start a thread keeping track of what I've done and how it's going.

    Thanks!

Welcome Andy, I have some shady bits in my garden and most things seem to be ok providing they get some sun, the roots might be more of a problem stealing water and nutrients from the ground. Maybe put your compost bin and a shed and some rhubarb in the shady bits?

congratulations and welcome to the forum Andy

Take some photos now so you can keep looking back at all the effort you put in!
Is there anyway that the trees can be pruned back a bit? Who owns them? Are they on the allotment/someone's garden?
Though as Burnie has suggested you can use your shady areas for other things.

Hello and welcome, Andy. Like burnie says, your biggest problem might be the roots rather than the shade. Lettuce, for example, love shade and can be difficult to grow at the height of summer. You might just have the perfect spot if you can keep them watered.

Hope you have a great time and plenty of fun on your allotment.

                Hi and welcome.
It’s a great time of year to get a plot. Few months where weeds don’t grow too much to let you get it licked into shape, and decide what you want to be growing in the spring ;-)

So after 2 weekends I have managed a few hours on the plot. Mostly spent digging out couch grass and hopelessly trying to get every bit of root out. Probably got about a quarter of the plot cleared.

Not worked out how to add photos on here yet but will update when i do.

Im off work next week so will hopefully get some more done.
